Can This Stub Axle be Saved?

Had a bearing go bad on driver's side wheel on the BJ7 and the inner race of the outer bearing welded itself to the stub axle. Finally able to remove it but not without some damage to the axle. Can this continue to be used without fear of breakage or is it time for a new axle. Onky source I see new is from Denis Welch for about $350. Anyone got a serviceable used one or a source?

If the bearing race welded itself to the axle, then the axle saw a lot of heat it isn't supposed to see. I would scrap it for a new one.

This is an excellent advertisement for the need for regular examination for bearing wear and greasing of the bearings. The wire wheel hubs can also "weld" themselves with rust and abnormal wear to the splined adapters if they are not cleaned, inspected and re-lubricated periodically. I do mine at least once a year, but then I put more miles on my car than most, and on long trips.

I agree with Dougie & Steve and also strongly recommend having any used ones you buy crack checked. These are prone to cracks and you don't know what kind of life a used one has been through...

I know that they are expensive but the uprated ones from Denis Welch are new forgings machined with larger radiuses and are stronger, good piece of mind IMO.

That's what I changed to after an original one broke on me during a race a few years ago - not a fun experience.

If it isn't too late, I have a good crack tested (and passed) original MOWOG stub axle if you are interested. I'll be in Florida next week so I could bring it with me and post it from there if you want.

If you get the opportunity, give me a call again; things have slowed down considerably here since your last trip...

Andy,

I very much appreciate the offer, but I've already placed the order. Thanks anyway for your help and enjoy Florida.

Hi Rick,

No problem. I'm guessing the DW ones come with kingpin bushes already installed and reamed?

Randy- yea I will make a more concerted effort to get in touch. Last time I did nine weeks of 12 hour days with only a couple of days off, this time I have six weeks with hopefully a bit more spare time. I'd love to come over for a drive but I wouldn't like "The Pig" to soil your nice clean driveway

Andy.
