TR4/4A Can the TR6 exhaust go on a TR4A

Will the 1972 TR6 exhaust EASILY go onto the TR4A Live Axle car, and is there any good reason not to do this?

The Moss catalogue uses the same part number for the head pipe on the TR4A and the 1972 TR6 (860-010) which would suggest it should be a straight bolt on. I am planning to use a slip on flex coupling to reduce engine vibration so any difference in length can be made up by these.

Moss currently have the TR6 1972-76 Stainless Steel Exhaust by Tourist Trophy (part number 860-215) for sale. Its a dual pipe exhaust and judging by the pictures looks great. Strangely the 4A exhausts are not on sale when the earlier and later model cars have sales on the exhausts.

Richard, that live axle is your problem. The system is designed to go around the rear end of a independent. The dual system for the axle you have is collected into a single pipe by the transmission, then single until behind the axle then a "Y" to go to two mufflers out the back. I put that system on my TR6, but had to bend everything the opposite way.
Lucky I have the correct system to go on when I get time, the overdrive will be going in at the same time.

Wayne,
So the TR6 exhaust will fit a TR4a IRS?

The dual downpipe on the TR4a and the later dual downpipe from 72 newer TR6 are the same. As far as the rest of the system they are a little different but with some mods I'm sure something could be worked out.

The rear hangers will need to be placed in the trunk wheel well. Be sure to use large washers or a strip of metal on both sides.
The rear axle holder will need a hole drilled on the right side of the bracket, if I remember rightly.

Wayne,
You are exactly right. I took a closer look at the picture of the TR6 and then went under my 4A live axle. It appears that the pumpkin sits higher on the TR6 vs the TR4A live axle (probably because of the IRS), thus allowing the dual pipes to run under the prop shaft. This must be why the oem dual pipe exhaust for the TR4A has a single pipe running down to a Y that then goes down either side of the pumpkin. Pitty, the TR6 dual pipe exhaust looks nice, and Moss have a significant discount on it right now.
