Can be tricky when life presents opportunities

When I bought the TR3A last year, it was one of those life opportunities that pop up from time to time — I wasn’t actively looking for one (though it was on my list) and when a chance conversation came up with a friend last fall I had to seriously and thoughtfully consider.

Well, another opportunity just presented itself. To be clear (and this is for @AngliaGT) I was very happy having trimmed down my little fleet with the sale of my MGB. Money in the bank, and 1 fewer vehicular mouth to feed. Felt right.

Then I was cleaning up studio/office space and was reminded about how much Bugeye stuff I’ve collected over the years. I even have the cookie jar! I’ve cleared out all the other accumulations for other cars, but the Bugeye stuff has stayed. Got me thinking that someday I’d like have another one, all done and ready to be driven and not a project. Need a few years to gather budget as I’d be looking more at the top of the market. Save for a few years and then go hunting.

So I started a little research to see what the going prices are, to get a sense of what budget I’d need. Good to have a goal. And then the opportunity presented itself. Time again to seriously and thoughtfully consider.

This story actually starts in the spring of 2025, when I ran across a RHD Bugeye on BringATrailer. I've never bid on BAT and rarely browse there even just for entertainment, but for some reason I was skimming through and noticed the car. My fascination with RHD is well documented, so I decided to set myself a budget and go ahead and bid. I stuck to my limit and was ultimately outbid, but that moment started me on some automotive changes that have ultimately led to a near-complete rollover of all of our vehicles except Maggie the Minor.

I had largely stopped thinking about that Bugeye until last week, when I was doing my pricing research and saw that the very same car was for sale again through Bugeyeguys. Here's my unexpected opportunity. Turns out the car was back on BAT this past April while I was dealing with medical stuff, and ultimately wound up back with Bugeyeguys. Maybe the poor little car was just waiting for me to get healthy enough, but after some phone calls and serious thinking we came to an agreement and I bought the car!

So I have my running, RHD Bugeye at last, or will in a few weeks when it gets delivered from Connecticut. It was certainly not cheap, but I'm at a point in life where I'm not interested in projects or bodywork. One can't always jump on these opportunities, but this time around it was the right thing to do.
