So far I've got a Longman GT7 head, be selecting +40 Hepolite pistons (9.4:1 CR), and for now stock rockers (budget!!)

Toughest selection is the cam. I've read Vizard back and forth and I had decided on the KENT 266.

But after reading more, seems the the APT VP7 fits into a performance slot between the Kent 266 and 276.

Anyone have any experience with this cam?...General opinions?

I lean towards APT cams for street motors, beause David only sells nitrited regrinds and billets and they are always in the 57-60 rockwell C hardness range and then I use his lifters, which are 60+ rockwell C. Today with our motors, hardness ratings of lifters and cam are the number 1 thing you have to worry about in a engine rebuild and the number 1 to fail. I think when you compare APT to Kent in price, they are close, that's why I would go the APT route, you know what you are getting.
 
Hap, thanks for the info. Just talked to David at APT and now I think I'm going to go with APTs version of the 276 cam.

Boz - what else is in your engine, - ported head, bigger valves...CR? I'll probably be asking for more info. as I started putting my pieces together. Your idle isn't to lumpy? What's your idle RPM?

I have a VP7 from APT and am very happy with it.

Dave/APT is definately the company to go with.

Not very lumpy, but a little loud, mostly inhaling and definately exhaling.

My mistake Patrick. Do you have the 'bigger' valves on your head. Popular size seems to be about 1.4 intake, 1.21 outake.

20 over arp bolts all the way through. The head has been ported and polished. It has the larger valves and springs, milled... The hole nine yards. It is supposed to be as hot and still dependable as it can be.
I know a guy in Tenn. that has been racing sprites for about 30 years. He built a head for me, pretty much at cost. I can't remember how much I paid exactly, but the price was ridiculous!! Like $300 or something. I am still building the motor. Getting ready to paint it this weekend. He really knows these motors and has the same set-up on his son's car.
 
Yes, those are the valve sizes. They are waisted and seats deleaded.

ARP studs for head and flywheel, not for rods because I was told of some concerns with torqing and clearance.

The price of the work that was done by APT was a bit expensive, but I would spend every penny again, and again and again...

If you do have APT do some machine work for you, expect a little wait time. Also get in touch with Phil as well, he is the shop guy there.

Make sure you have some good rocker bushings to keep the lift up. I used Isky Push rods and had the passages reamed for a bit more clearance.

Overall I would seriously consider the intake manifold, carb mods and an LCB with a larger pipe and a nice non-restrictive muffler. I am not sure what size vavles you have, but let her breath.
