TR2/3/3A Camshaft/Crank alignment on TR3

Hello once again.

Lots of questions while I'm building my engine.

My parts came back from the shop without the shims that fit between crankshaft timing sprocket and the crankshaft. I can scalp a couple off another engine in a pinch but how do I set crankshaft/camshaft alignment? That is, how do I know how many shims/what thickness to use for this? I checked the workshop manual and cannot see any instructions for setting the shim thickness and thus the alignment between these two gears.

Thanks again

Pat

Check paragraph xix on page B34. It has the text, but no diagram.

Here's the diagram from the TR4 manual

I spoke too soon. What is the tolerance for the alignment between cam and crank gear. Paragraph (xix)doesn't indicate any tolerance for alignment. I assume you set the alignment after you check camshaft endfloat?

I've never seen a tolerance, but I think within .004" should be plenty. I just pushed both the crank & the camshaft to the rear, and got it as close as I could with the shims I had.

What you are looking for is a little side to side free play on the timing chain in realtionship to gears/sprockets.
