camshaft and camshaft bearing information please

I know this is probably old news for many of you, but I need some background information about camshafts and cam bearings. I have a 69 TR6 that currently has no cam bearings. The block and lower engine parts are at the machine shop right now.I was informed the cam was bad enough that it had to be replaced - no surprise there considering the abuse from the PO. I was surprised that they said the cam polished bores in the block were okay. How are they able to tell this? How do you know when cam bearings are necessary? I was looking at Paul's site, and it looks very involved. What is the cost to do this? Any information would greatly be appreciated.

It is very expensive to have the block line bored for cam bearings. It's a lot more than for main bearings due to the slow process of only removing 010" per cut on each of the bores in the block that support the cam. It took nearly ten total hours to do mine and once you start, you have to run until it's finished. And the shop has to have the right equipment to do it properly, as many do not.

The good news is that yours are OK. The machinist will measure each journal or inner diameter of the cam supporting area with an ID or inside diameter micrometer to find out the total diameter of the bore and they also check them for concentricity at the same time.

I hope that helps you to understand what is being done and if you look at my pictures again, you will probably get a better feel for what was going on and why. Mine were actually OK. I just wanted the bearing installed in my block. I had the money at the time and I had the right guy to do the job. Not all engines need them. Those engines with high lift cams are said to need them more than the milder grinds.
