No,but they seem to have a "strong like bull" reputation.

The K1000 is built by a good outfit (we have a few Pentax cameras).....looks to be a good choice.

K1000 was the old standard. When you're not using it as a camera it can double as a hammer.

Besides which going out and looking at all the different old cameras available can be educational too. He'll have to learn about what he's getting and whether it'll do what he wants done. So, what's F2.8 anyway? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Are you my half brother or something? I heard my dad saying that as soon as I read the first post. I would have said the same to my step kids when they pulled made those decisions. When I bought my first SLR in college, I had to decide what features I could afford and not have as good of a camera as many of my fraternity brothers. And I still look at the used cameras whenever looking to get a new item for the camera bag.

Well I talked it over with his school counselor and to take another elective would’ve screwed up his whole class schedule & might of left him lacking for credits at the end of the year to graduate. Right now we’ve got a good buffer and she suggested he take this class over my objections. After my initial reaction of “well why don’t you pay for his camera then?” I relented and have agreed to this class.

But whatever happens – the camera is mine and he’d better take care of it. Truthfully he’s gotten better with his stuff and I won’t be replacing anything he gets from now on.

In fact the cost of the camera is going to come out of some work (grunt work) he’ll be doing for me on Sunday. I’m decommissioning an old X-Ray system next week and needed some extra muscle so I decided to have him join me. I talked to my boss and he said it’d be alright if I just pad my time card for a couple extra hours for my son helping out.

Should be interesting – because we’re not simply talking about mowing the lawn or raking up some leaves. We’re talking down & dirty wear your junkiest cloths type of work, because you’re going to sweat and your going to get greasy & grimy. I’m actually kind of excited about seeing how he handles real work for a change.

I know it's out of your range but I would recommend a canon EOS D30 - that's if he's going to get serious.

Yes I saw the EOS D30 and it looked nice. But you're correct - it is waaaay out'a my price range. Should he get serious? Well, we'll just have to see.

The good news is I found a camera on eBay and it shipped yesterday. I paid a little extra for shipping so I should it should be delivered today. The cameara is the K1000 that was recommended above.

Kind'a nice it's got'a couple extra lenses. Body, 30mm, 50mm and a 75-200mm along with a flash unit & color filters.

I'm think'in this should get him through the class without any difficulties.

The same way I feel about my Nikon F doc, should make a great self-defense club. Used it to take Christmas pics this past holiday instead of the digicam and am pleased it still works. Next I guess I will dust off the Rollie and try my hand at square.

I have a pair of K1000s at home. At least one of them still works-my first one got dropped off a table and the film winder knob got bent up a little. Rather than get it fixed I got a used one (this is the one that still works-it's an original Japanese made one from the 70s rather than the Chinese made one I bought new in 1990). I used the second one until about 2003 or 4, when I got a new Canon film camera, which I only used for about a year and a half, until digital SLRs came down in price enough for me to afford one (at the time $1000 and up was the going rate)
