Cam in...I'm pooped!

Finally got my new cam installed in the block. Woof. I ain't as young as I once was!

Quit for the night.

I marked my timing chain and upper and lower sprockets with a dab of bright fingernail polish, oriented the new cam, and bolted it right up. I dialed in TDC (#1 firing stroke), and the new cam ought to be in the ball park. Not perfect but close. Since I do have an adjustable cam sprocket, I may only have to make minor if any adjustments. I hope. Lathered her up real good with some Clevite cam lube, will apply more when I drop in the lifters. Guess I will static time her to make certain she fires quickly when that time comes, down the road.

Lifting the engine is a PITA, skinned several knuckles setting it back. Kinda like the "no grill" look.

Time to rest.

That #3 lobe was indeed trashed. 10 or the 12 lifters showed between early wear to trashed! Had to be either bad lifters or too weak valve springs.

Oh, and I went with Uncle Ted's S2 cam with his certified (each tested) hardened lifters.

Just what is your favorite color nail polish, big boy????

Way to go Bill!

Yeah, I'm finding I still love the hobby but my energy is not what it used to be. I need to build up my patience to be more in line with what I can get done as being bent over all day on an engine is not easy.

I need to talk to Ted about TR4 lifters, it seems that is a major complaint from everyone now.

Randy,

I bought my 4A lifters from Ken at British frame and engine. Each one had a small divet mark on it indicating that each was individually tested for hardness, not just a batch sample taken. They also have oil drain holes drilled. Very happy with my selection. Ted's may be the same... but ask.

Ted's were individually tested at 54 hardness, or at least that is what I paid for. We shall see. This time, my springs are set right.

Bill,

I believe that you said that the (new) springs were set at 85lbs at the seat. Is that correct?

Did you end up using the collars on the bottom?

My head is at the shop now. I dropped it off Weds and got a call Thursday from Bob that one of my new SS exhaust valves wasn't seated properly and was leaking. That explains the sudden odd idle in the last five miles before pulling it apart.

Sigh....see, you're not the only one. I only had about 275 miles on that valve job.

But better now than later!!!

Thank you very much. Happy to see that you went with the collars.

Even happier that you are making forward progress.

No, little brother, I won't get'er done in time. Technically, it is doable, but got too many irons in the fire over the next 5 days. Might show up as a tourist though.

If you do make it one way or the other, look for "fats", I'll probably be the only guy hanging around with him. Well Guidry might be there if you want to count him.
Jeff's girlfriend lives in Metairie and if he's in town, I'll probably spend Saturday night over there and go eat sushi.
