Hey guys,

Getting started on the TR2 bonnet, and I have a question about the rear edge. My bonnet has only a straight, sheer edge at the back. Is this "correct"? The TR3 bonnets have a 1/4" lip folded down at the rear to add stiffness, but my TR2 does not.
 
What you have sounds correct, my 56 TR3 has the same rear edge and I know it's correct. Yours may have 4 vent holes in the back, not sure when they changed to two. Mine also has two rivets near the back edge, not sure if the 2 has them or not.
 
My January 1957 TR3 has a straight shear rear edge, two rivets to hold the rear of bonnet to the cross-wise bonnet brace, and two vent holes.

TS1- TS6500 had four slits in the raised portion and should have two rivets near the back edge. Rivets ended around TS22530. I can't find when the sheered edge ended, most likely when they discontinued the two rivets.
 
Just as a matter of confirmation, my 56 (TS11537) has the shear rear edge and two vent holes. Cheers, Mike
 
Thanks for the quick responses, Keith, Mike, Marv, and Chuck! It just seemed so "unfinished", I was making myself believe someone had trimmed the rear edge later. Using a straight edge, it is not even that straight of an edge. I did measure the length, though, and the TR2 bonnet is actually 1/4" longer than my TR3A...so I guess that's how they did it.

This is the TR2 bonnet. No rolled rear edge, making it very flimsy! It does have the 4 vent holes and 2 rivets.









For comparison, this is the TR3 bonnet I have. You can see it has about 1/4" turned downward to add some stiffness to the rear edge of the bonnet. This bonnet is from Marv's donor car, but my TR3A is identical.

That says it all...I guess after Standard got rid of the aluminum bonnet they were trying to save weight any way they could.

Again, thanks to all. Now I can get back to work on it with confence!
 
Wait until you try to get the gap correct and have to add material to the back edge, very time consuming.

I can imagine. I see sheer marks on the edge once the paint was taken off. It looks like the factory just trimmed the edge to match the gap. It is also pretty sharp. If the bonnet ever inadvertently opens...I plan on ducking!
 
John, Is your bonnet the same length on each side? The bonnet on my January 1957 TR3 is 1/4 inch shorter on the left side of the bonnet than on the right side. I do not know, but maybe this is how the factory got the gap correct at the rear of the bonnet?? It is interesting that you can see shear marks at the rear of your bonnet. Chuck
