California Vin Verification ???

Does anyone know if the sheriff department officers can sign off on a Vin verification? There is a private individual who advertises his services around here but he would cost $70. I was hoping someone that does patrol around here could be talked into signing the form.

I am in So Cal. I have some friends on the force and no, I don't think they will do it. AAA will sign off if you can bring the car to them. Not sure about the DMV, but at least one hurdle would be to wait in the proper line that results in extracted a DMV worker from their cube farm to the parking lot. That line may not exist.

I used AAA for the Warwick. Easy easy. On the Peerless, because it was in such a frightening state and could only be hauled on flat bed, I opted for the mobile VIN verifier. It was probably 7 years ago and I recall it costing a bit over $100. Came to the house... looked at the paperwork, found the VIN and signed it off in 10 mins. Much easier then getting the mess on and off the trailer. Depending on the state of the car, $70 sounds like a reasonable price for a house call.
 
I had to take a Bugeye I had to a Highway Patrol Station when I took it to AAA the Vin plate was in my hand and they wouldn't accept that. I put the vin plate on the car and then had to get a form from the DMV and take it to the Highway Patrol. The HP will run a check on the Vin# to see if it is stolen etc. After they sign off you have to take that document to either the DMV or AAA. it is much easier to deal with AAA once you have the paper work done than the DMV. You do have to get the form for thew HP to sign off on from the DMV because you can't print it out on the internet.
 
CA DMV says "Any California peace officer",but prefers that CHP do it.
Do you know any CHP officers?You could have them verify it at your home.Or,if you
have a trailer,take it to a CHP or DMV office.
 
Based on your advice, I used the mobile guy that is from the next town. It was simple, but I was surprised to find the bill was actually $80 for about 10 min work.
 
Note if you are in CA. The form says the car cannot be disassembled! I had already taken off the fenders but most of the car was still together. Since all but one of my cars has come in boxes and 3 of them needed vin verification, this is something I will have to think about next time.
 
Yes he did mentioned the engine needs to be in, but he did not actually check the number on the engine to the vin plate.
