What's the nicest (&/or)fastest way to go
from California to Florida (by way of Tenn.)
We're planning on going in September.
This would be from aprox.Sacramento,CA,to Tenn.,
& ending up in Jacksonville,Florida.

Run I-80 till it connects w/I-29 south of Omaha, NE, catch I-70 across KS & MO then I-64 to Mt Vernon, IL dropping south on I-57 to its junction w/I-24 into Nashville (vivit Mickey Richaud in Clarksville, TN as you go through)...from Nashville stay on I-24 to Chattanooga, TN then I-75 through Atlantauntil you catch I-10 in Florida - turn east & when you hit the ocean, you're in Jacksonville!
 
Well, for sure you'd want to go through New Mexico on I-40 /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif
 
My "AAA Map'n'Go" computer program says the route I described above is 3082 miles from Eureka, CA to Jacksonville, FL with Nashville as a via-point.

Scrubbing Nashville as a via-point, the shortest route of 3062 miles is dropping all the way down California to run I-10 across country.

To hit New Mexico & use I-40, the route is 3146 miles leaving Nashville out; 3217 miles adding Nashville.

The I-40 route is mostly a straight shot and while it does not include Nashville, it does include Memphis, TN.
 
Of course, I'm a fan of the I-80 route, you can stop by here again. There's a nice route that takes US-40 right by my house, into Colorado, then down through a beautiful canyon to I-70.
 
I-40 goes right through Nashville also

However, Eureka is so far north in California that the high route along I-80 is the closest run to Nashville.....& dropping down to I-40 straight across the country adds miles (though I prefer it myself, having driven both).

Train #6, the California Zephyr , Sacramento to Chicago.

Train #30, the Capitol Limited , Chicago to Washington D.C.

Train #97, the Silver Meteor , D.C. to Jacksonville.

$714 for a roomette. I couldn't figure out how to go via Nashville, but I'm sure there's a way.

Funny, but my Sister's moving from Los Angeles to Nashville this fall, and I've apparently been tapped to help drive her back this-a-way. Apparently we're shipping her belongings to Nashville because renting a truck in California for a one-way trip to Tennessee is ridiculously expensive.

From long experience driving an 18 wheeler across country--stay off I10. The rest stops are bad and there are not enough good places to stop. I liked either I80 or I40. Pick up 40 by going through Bakersfield and the Tehacapi (sp) into Mohave. Loved going either way--rule of thumb take 80 in summer and 40 in winter. Just my $.02.
 
Thanks for the input.We'll be driving our Son's car back to him,otherwise we'd fly.
This just came up suddenly,as I had to put in for vacation time.I'll probably post again,when the time gets closer.
