California emissions question

I have a 1976 TR6 which, as far as I can tell, has had about 95% of the emissions equipment removed, and am having a TBI kit installed. In Texas I am currently emissions test exempt. However, I may be moving to California in the new year. So, what would I have to do to get this ready for the emissions test there, apart from hoping that the latest house bill is repealed and they go back to the 30-year testing exemption? Would I have to acquire (from where???) and re-fit the original emissions eqipment and remove the TBI?

Thanks,
Mark

It might be cheaper for you to commute to California from Texas than to find the original emissions equipment.

Bad news... To register a 1976 or newer non-resident car in California it must meet or exceed California Emissions standards. Under the law, you have 20 days upon establishing residency to register the car to avoid penalties (not sure how closely they monitor this other then to accept your declaration of residency). Upon registration and every two years, you must pass the state smog check, which includes a visual examination of the smog system originally installed on your car, plus the emissions test.

Any modification to the smog system, and the exhaust system that increase noise will fail the smog check.

If you are in the military other options exist. Check the Calif. dmv site

I would also contact the CA DMV through their web sit with questions specific to your situation.
