I found out something else about California DMV -
We have a '78 Datsun B210 that was bought over a year ago.
I'm still working on it,so I haven't been able to smog it
yet.
While I was at DMV registering the B210 that I just bought ($79),I inquired about the othe Datsun. It turned out that I owed $80,because I hadn't payed renewel fees.
I know,I should have gotten a non-op.
Anyway,I hope that this saves someone some money.

If you don't know when you'll have it back on the road it's always a good idea to at least get the non-op registration.

Usually only about ~20% of the normal reg fees. So an $80 registration fee like my 78 MGB sould be about $17.

Also if you have to have it smoged and it dosn't pass you still have to pay the full registration price and are issued one of those temp window tags. That way you can still drive it for a preset period of time (1 month in my F-150's case). The bad news is you still have to pay the FULL registration fees.

Good luck.

MAN, I'm sure glad I don't live in Hollywood Land! You guys are hit with just about everything imaginable.

And if you opt out of the "non-op" registration for a few years and then try and sell the car you might run into trouble.

In my case, the seller had the car off road and racked up about $540 in fees. In his case, he also could not find the title. CA DMV refused to issue a dup until the back fees were paid.

It used to be that you could ignore DMV,& let the vehicle
get off of the computer system.
I tried that with a Cortina that wasn't running a few
years back. They sent me a few notices, then they sent one
in which they threatened to turn me in to a collection agency.I was told that even if I wanted a salvage title
that I had to pay the back fees.

Paul,

Watch out, a whole bunch of old lefties out here are selling their million plus dollar homes and moving out to areas like where you live. Doesn't take to many, and you are in big trouble.

I remember when California had an open carry law. Just put the guns on the truck's gun rack and take off. Now the gun in one locked carrier and the ammo in another. But worse them that, where I live, a lot of folks bought 40+ acres of redwood and fir with the intent of logging it in their old age. Not happening....

I have to agree with you Ray, as there has been a building boom around Myrtle Beach for quite some time now. There seems to be no shortage of money coming into the area. Even though we live 25 miles west, the boom is coming our way and the property values are starting to sky rocket out here in the farm country. What was $10,000.00 pr acre 6 years ago is now 50 to 60 thousand. The 25 mile gap is closing fast as most of the properties at the beach are used up and the only way they can go is west. And, yup, people from up in high dollar land are moving here bring their Northern ideas with them. Change is inevitable I guess and there is nothing we can do about it.

Ray:

Since you are apparently very comfortable commenting about "a whole bunch of old lefties"....

Let me just tell you that this old lefty recalls how a bunch of "old-money righties" killed off Bridghampton race track and made it into a golf course and country club.

And these days, the most promising new road racing course in the eastern US, New Jersey Motorsport Park, is being built in an area well-known for its left-wing politics.

By the way, I go trap shooting once in a while and I'd bet that about half the folks I see there are "leftys".

I agree that people with money often retire and bring that money to different areas....I just don't think that action is limited to one political viewpoint.
One of the best things about British Car Forum is that we all try real hard to keep politics out of our discussions as much as possible.
I know it's tough.
It kills me sometimes. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Is it at least possible that he was referring to West Coasters as lefties, as in 'left coast' vs 'right coast'? Which wouldn't make it political at all now would it...

When I left Utah 12 years ago the pop was about 1 million ppl total. Now it`s 2.5 million and growing leaps and bounds. There was a lot of "Public" land around my county back then, most of it has been bought up and privatised {sad to see}. All of a sudden we have these "california back fees" too! What a shame. I suppose soon we will also have the good ole inspection tailpipe sniffer test too thanks to all of these people moving here. I suppose I would sell my California home for a million dollars and move to Utah too, where I could buy 10 acres and a 5,000 sq ft home and still have gobs of money to rathole away for future use. The worst of it is back then we had no gang problems, not true now! We had no water rationing then either, not ture now. I know we have to "Progress" but can`t some of you progress somewhere else?
I liked what Utah was back then, as far as i`m concerned it getting pretty ugly here now. I shudder at the thought that my Tr hasn`t been licensed sence the 80`s

I like what California use to be, too. But all good things must end eventually. Not that CA is a bad place, it just isn't how I remember it, nor are many other places I've been in the world. It happens everywhere and will continue to happen.

They tried the sniff test here in Fl. but it only lasted a couple of years before they canned it ( /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/banana.gif /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/banana.gif /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/banana.gif ). Surprisingly though one does not see as many belchers and smokers on the road as one would think!!
