Well after stopping at my buddies shop and watching two guys stand on the main hoop yesterday, I did have nightmares last night. But I must say. My expectations have been exceeded! I am really impressed. Its 90% complete. Just working on the grand national bars and the seat mounts and I can pick it up tommorow, And the welds.... the plates look like they were machine welded to the body. Here's a few pics I snapped. Don't ask about the price tag. I still don't know and may have nightmares about that tonight. He didnt have the DOM, so I picked it up at $360 alone after I chewed the guy down $.75 a foot and no tax... But here's some pics. And the good news is I can still get threw the door.

Now I just have to figure out how to get a dash board in this thing with that horizontal tube in the way, and maybe if the weather holds out I can hit it with the final primer coats this weekend.

What exactly are you planning on doing with this car? If it is any SCCA type road racing, the horizontal that is contained within the main hoop should continue straight across. Your pics show the one behind the drivers seat and the one behind the passenger side at two different heights. This horizontal should be located just below shoulder level when seated. It doubles as a seat belt attachment point and a seat back support. You will also need double door bars on both sides. Make sure you have the fabricator weld on your window net attachments before you have the cage painted.

Go to SCCA.com and download the rule book. There is a nice diagram of a recommended cage design on page 90. See rules 9.4.2d and 9.4.2j on pages 91 and 92.

Wow!
Looking <u>real</u> good!
I may have to bring #11 out of vintage retirement if you bring that thing around next year.
And I just found another guy we know has just bought a race Sprite to run with us. Between you, me, ChrisS, Pete and this other guy, we'll have a Spridget festival next year if this all works out.

ps-if you're loose, come to Lime Rock on Oct 27

Nial, Oh Ill be at lime rock the end of Oct. Im dragging the wife so she might (Very loosely) appreciate all that time I burn in the garage, Lime rock's a good atmosphere to get her involved. Ill likely be up there mid day Friday and try to drag her back Sat. Like to meet all you guys and start planning my strategy to get this on the track next year. Paint showed up today. So if I can work extremely dilegently and the weather cooperates I may be painting this weekend.

Tr8odd, As for where Ill be running it, I really got attracted to EMRA half way through my build beacause they seem to do much more and give you more opprotunity for "local" track time, so I designed the cage per there spec. (Than overkilled it) Also there will be no passenger seat; the bar behind my seat was designed around my height and seatbelt mount requirements. I contemplated two bars but I really wanted to be able to get in & out. There is a car show 1 mile down the road every Thurs night that some of my family goes too, so I'd like to be able to keep a plate on it. My street spridget got much attention with all those BB American Muscle crowds, im sure this will top it off.

That sounds like you will have alot of fun. I have been thinking about running my TR8 at some EMRA events next year. The way it currently sits, it's not 100% legal for the ever changing SCCA rule book, but it will be fine for EMRA. The last race I did was on the weekend before 9/11, so I got some catching up to do. I was under the impression that EMRA did require the same cage specs as the SCCA thou. I am sure that is only for the enduro and sprint racing and not the time trial stuff.

Todd:

Most of us EMRA people are old SCCA folks. Your pre-2001 cage would likely be fine for us.
We try to have a good balance between "fun and laid-back" but also "safe".
The only thing that would be required are the updated harnesses. "SFI-tagged" belts can be 2 years old max and "FIA-tagged" belts can be five years old max...this is the same as SCCA.
By the way, I think this is a stupid rule and I think the SFI belts should be OK for five years too. I'm the EMRA RaceChair and I've been trying to get our Board to change this rule.

Anyway, if you're loose on October 27 come on over to Lime Rock and I'll buy you a beer. EMRA will be there all day Saturday (we have a TT on Friday, Oct 26, but I won't be there until late).

I run about 16 days a years with EMRA on six different tracks (actually 9 if you count the different Pocono circuits). And we're adding another track, NJMP (in Millville, NJ) next year.
We have a very extensive schedule, but I think a lot of people in the eastern USA don't realize it.

" J. In order to provide a secure seat back support a section of tubing equal to the roll bar shall be installed horizontally from the main hoop upright to the diagonal brace. This tube shall be no higher than houlder
height."

Looks like the horisontal bar is fine to me. But I'm not an autohority, and have been shouted down in the past.

The diangonal main hoop brace can be incorparated many different way for SCCA racing, it can be in the plane of the main hoop as with this cage, it is, it can be full or partial length, or it can be outside the plane of the main hoop and go back to one of the rear main hoop braces. As for a SCCA rules, everything except the door bars or lack of enough of them looks SCCA legal to me, and if it were me, I add another door bar in there and some braces connecting the two door bars.

Yep...That front driver's side corner should be the strongest part of the cage.

I've seen hits in that area where there was intrusion even though the cage was well built.

Sometimes people put a forward support in that area also.
