Our flight leaves 8 pm tomorrow for the Camino de Santiago.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Way_of_St._James

We (SWMBO & I) are going for 35 days and walking 800km (500 mi) Hosteling all the way. Fling into Paris and out of Lisbon. Taking the train to St Jean de Pied De Port.

Almost all packed - got a 50 litre pack over the weekend and packed clothes sleeping bag etc. without toiletries the bag weighs 13.3 lb packed! So I will come in under 20lb handily. (woo hoo) They recommend you not carry more than 10% of your weight and I'm not - which says more about my weight than anything else. :wall: (hoping to address that on the Camino as well)

Of course we will be offline as well which I am looking forward to.

Am excited and a tad apprehensive.

Still green with envy here!

I look forward to hearing about it. We're still planning a trip to Spain, but it won't be anything like what you're doing.

Wow JP!!! My family and I watched "The Way" recently. Doing what you're about to do is on our family bucket list. I look forward to hearing about your experiences upon your return.

Wow! Long walk. How many miles a day do you calculate you will have to do?

Good Luck and enjoy the trip.

That's going to be an amazing and memorable journey!
Have a great time!

Wish I was along for the ride, right now I can barely afford a major vacation... Have a great time JP and may it be inspiring to you during the pilgrimage...

we figure about 28 km a day (17 miles) this shouldn't be too strenuous (famous last words) First day is 28km over the Pyrenees. :wall:

actually we decided not to plug in - a dear friend edits our denomination's magazine and wanted us to blog - we said no, if for no other reason than we didn't want to have to lie if we had an off day.

we will have a smart phone just in case and may touch base at internet cafes but part of the journey is being unplugged. A friend did it a couple years ago (she just got back from the Portuguese Camino) and she said it took 2 weeks just to decompress and that she brought her Bible and couldn't even read. Just walk and walk and sometimes think. That sounds good.

We are now all packed and SWMBO has a 13lb pack - full and mine is 18lb.

thanks for all your care!

I think it's said the average person walks 3 miles per hour. I figured if/when we do it to allow 2 mph. So 2 mph x 8 hrs = 16 miles. Your estimate of 17 miles is well within reach, I would think.
