C-17 at Davis Island

I watched it come in. The hovel is nearly under the final, he was obviously off course and low when he came in, didn't think it was right and had confirmation a bit later.

Wasn't concerned about it getting off the island, knew they'd just toss everything that wasn't a C-17 part over th' side and GO. They had runway to spare. :smirk:

Different crew flew it out, I suspect the first guys had an appointment and were a bit busy.

Ah, brings back memories. I had my first solo at POK.

I agree doc... that crew had some splaining to do.

The fella in the "green bag" and sunglasses looks like a guy I know at 6th AMW, haven't talked with him about it yet. I'll know sooner or later.

I know a guy who pilots those things outta Charleston. But, I'd bet the Air Farce has a barricade up on news right about now.

I strongly suspect you are/were correct re the 'appointment.'

(Is it a controlled field? Perhaps they can blame a traffic controller for giving them the wrong vectors? Well, probably not...)

Short-field landings are a built-in "feature". Very neat aircraft. I suspect the A.C. was a bit into the High Pucker Country when he realized the runway looked a bit shorter than he expected. He ~did~ put it down "on the numbers" and was quick to use all the tools available to stop the thing.
I'm guessing he'd not come into MacDill recently, either.

No intel from the base, tho it has happened before. Just glad it wasn't a KC-135 making the same error. There'd be a big *SPLASH* in that case.

Reminds me of the joke where the pilot says to the co-pilot: "That had to be the SHORTEST runway we've EVER landed on!" And the co-pilot says: "You got that right!!! But would you look how WIDE this runway is!!!"

Oops!

I was at my Dad's house today (near Lakehurst/McGuire Joint Base) and saw one of those fly over. That's a BIG bird for a 3400' parking lot.

Our airport (12N) is 1900' with lakes at both ends. If a twin with an unfamiliar driver comes in, they usually end up having a do-over......with the second try on-the-numbers.

I was lucky enough to hitch a ride on a KC-135 a few years ago. See it HERE.

This "wrong" landing kind of reminds me of the Gimli Glider, a 767 that ran out of gas and was forced to land on an abandoned airport in Canada.
They had a car race going on at the time.

As soon as I saw that photo Nial I knew exactly what it was.
I remember reading an article about the incident in Soaring Magazine. A pretty remarkable set of circumstances... everything just clicked into place!

edit: good thing the pilot was a "car guy"!

Elliot, you're a "no fuel" guy in any case.

Power/thrust/gain are foreign.

...just KIDDING!! :jester:

Real men don't use engines doc :jester:

So you say.

Guts or thrust.

PICK ONE!!! :jester:

...just remember: guns on target.

hummmm.... since you put that way THRUST. Zoom, Zoom

Climb out, invert, acquire and SHOOT!!

...I'm a zoomie. Can't help it.

Ft. Bragg, back inna '70's...

"Brave Shield" exercises. Some amazing things went down then.

...and a thing then called: "Zot" was previewed. JohnnyH was well considered.
