Bypass hose...

I need to replace the Bypass hose that connects on the top of the water pump.

It may seem like an easy question, but I wanted to see what the best way to replace the bypass hose. To remove the water pump, what is the easiest way to do this. The area is tight to get to, so should additional things be removed?

Thanks for any suggestions.
 
I imagine it can be done, but the only way I have ever done it is when the head was off.
 
The least that I have ever done to change a waterpump (along with the hose) was to pull the radiator, it was still a bit tight but doable.

No no. It is doable, just use a small peice of hose the right size from your local car parts place. Cut it just right, note the slits in the tubes it must go over. A bit of goose grease and a couple of screwdrivers and it can be done.
 
Of course Ray, that would word easier and is what Miss Agatha is useing but you have to order those. Regular hose is available localy.
 
Those corrugated hoses have a nasty reputation in the Mini community. As an alternative, I have often heard of a method very similar to what Jack suggests.

Buy a short piece of quality 1/2" heater hose. Cut it slightly shorter (1/4"-3/8") than the distance between the head and water pump. Remove all remnants of the old hose and take your new short piece of hose and fold it in half using vice grips. Put a little non-hardening sealant on the inside of each end of the hose (as a sealant and a lube) then push the hose against the two nipples as you manipulate the vice grips to release the hose in place. The worm type hose clamps that you can completely open are then fit to the hose to secure it.

I personally have not had to do this but have had several people I trust tell me that this method will work to get the bypass hose in place without pulling the head or the water pump.
 
Hehe, it will work. I had forgotten about the vicegrips. I did this way back in the 60s. Heck I didn't know any better.
