Back in mid-2005, I started a down-to-bare metal resto of a late '58 Bugeye. In early 2007 life got really complicated and all projects screeched to a halt. (I had trouble making it out to the garage, and there was no way that I could even get in the car.) Last Fall (2012) my fabricator friend Mike helped jump-start the stalled Bugeye project, which quickly morphed into a "resto-mod". I had a spare Datsun 210 5-speed (rebuilt by Bill M) on hand, a Datsun 1200 short block I acquired from Paul A via Bill M, and a mountain of both Datsun and Sprite parts I had acquired over the years.
The first pics show new x-members Mike fabricated (the original one was rusted out on the bottom). The 3rd one shows the engine's first test fit (onto saddle-style mounts Mike fabricated, which took place right after the first of the year. The 4th one shows some 14" EMPI wheels on the front; the EMPIs might stay on the car depending on what Mike can get done, fabrication-wise. (He's going to look into getting a Datun 210 rear end cut down to fit.) The last one is of the Bugeye on the trailer for the first leg of its trip to a new home.
Not pictured: a matching hardtop that goes with the car.
Along the way, Mike took time to weld new floors in my Morris Minor 1000 and do an alternator conversion in my Magnette ZB.
