Buying a car from Canada

Alright, folks, I need a bit of advice. Two things in particular -- paying for and shipping a car from Canada to the USA. Any thoughts/experiences are welcome. I need a safe way to pay a seller, and a good shipper to get the car here and smooth things through customs. Steve_S gave me one lead on a shipper (TFX International) and I have a request for a bid into them. I'll be talking with my bank on Monday to get their opinion on money transfers.

Any thoughts? Other things I should think of?

I would call Schumacher Cargo . I sold a TR3 to a fellow in the Netherlands and he coordinated everything with them. He paid them , they paid me and coordinated all of the proper paperwork and transport , door to door. It worked well for the buyer as his money was safe until the car was picked up. You are making a mistake with a money transfer unless it is a person you know. You have NO practical recourse. You could have the seller deliver his car across the border and do the transaction in the US. Then ship it. If the car is just north of Sault St. Marie ( Michigan) perhaps I can help arrange pick up and transport to my shop in Traverse City Mi. where you could pick it up. Best of luck , Kevin

brinkerhoff, interesting, i am about to send a healey to the netherlands, the person who's buying it has set up similar transportation/shipping arrangements, hes told me he has a restoratin shop and that hes done this many times without insident, just wondering if your car went to a person whos name is "BART"?... :savewave:

No it didn't go to a Bart. The problem I had was waiting so long to get my money. They won't send or wire the money before they pick the car up. I like to have good money in my hands before I let my car go. ( what a concept!)
