I'm really surprised at just how small some of the early motorcars were. I got to look at a late teens Model T roadster a few days ago and couldn't get over how narrow the passenger compartment was. And, from fore to aft, it was no bigger than my Sprite. Why, I'd bet I could fit a Model T and a Sprite nose-to-tail in my garage and still be able to close the door.

Uh oh, there goes that "I wonder..." spark in my brain again.

The proportions of the people in the US have changed and not for the better. Airline seats have gotten wider to accommodate the "width" of many Americans.
It doesn't surprise me that the early motor cars were smaller.
