Can anyone give me an idea as to whether to attempt to replace the front bushings on the spring pans, etc. on my own or not. What's involved? Do I have to take the springs out and if so, how?
 
Sure, if you have a flor jack so you can compress the springs & release them slowly

do you have a Bentley manual? If not, you'll want one.
 
Hey, thanks. I have a floor jack so I can do that. I assume I take off the rear bushes, etc. while the springs are compressed and then lower slowly?
 
No, remove the upper trunnion from the shock & allow it to tip over towards you...then decompress the spring....then, you can get to the rear bushings on the "A"'s...but you'll need to remove the kingpin assembly from the "A" so you might as well take care of it also
 
its do able if you're careful with the spring. The spring pan needs to be pulled off out of the lower wishe bones, in addition to un-bolting the lower trunion. When I did mine, I did it slightly different from how Tony is describing. However, if I were to do it again, I'd definitely do it the way he says as it'll make getting the spring pan back into position a LOT easier... definitely a situation where I was working harder rather than smarter than necesary... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif
 
A "real" floorjack becomes your friend with this job, too. Good idea to "presoak" all bolts with "loose juice" and pre loosen 'em a bit too.

Erm yeah... I soaked my problem bolts (upper trunion (or is that fulcrum pin?) bolts) with 3-in-1 oil over night. Then took a nice weighty 3# hammer to them the next morning... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

It is a nice weekend job which would be made a lot easier with the help of the Bentley manual. I did mine the winter before last and took weeks doing it, but I did a lot more than just change the bushings...I rebuilt the entire thing. Kind of a "might as well do this" type of job. There are a couple of old threads on this Forum about the job...search under "spring" or "spring pan".

I have a set of V-8 bushes you can have for $10. I could not use them because my pins were too pitted to allow them to slide on...the steel liners don't give like the rubber does...I will even deliver them and give you a hand dropping the spring if you want! And if you get in a jam, I'll bring over a second floor jack to lift the frame a little bit higher while you lower the spring pan with yours. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif
