Bumpers

I have been searching for new/ used bumpers instead of re-chroming and finally found a set but they are off of a 74. I guess I will have to keep looking. If anyone out there is looking for a 74 set let me know and I will send along the contact info of the seller. He is located in the Toronto area.

I thought there was a change in the bumpers in mid-1974. Aren't the late '74s the same as the '75 and '76 cars with the turn signals under the bumper? The early '74s had the turn signals above the bumper mounted to the body (I think). I'm not certain but I think you would need to know the the car was an early 1974 or not before giving up on it.

I thought they would all be the same except for the huge rubber things they put on the later TR6 and the dealer installed over rider bar. Most car manuractures usually dont change sheet metal and mounnting points for the same body, Lots of other changes like gauges, idiot lights, spoilers, wheels, I am not 100 percent sure on triumps but I had experience with volvos of the 60's

74 1/2 starting at serial number CF27001 to 1976 are all the same. These have the cut outs for the signal lights under the bumper and the rubber bumpers.1974 serial number CF 27000 down to CF 12501 had the lower mount bumper and signal lamps above the bumper,no rubber bumpers either

New safety standards mandated that British Leyland raise the bumpers on the TR6. That way they would catch you in the knee cap rather than the shin. I know that the turn signals on the early cars is in a hole in the front valance above the bumpers and the signals on the later cars are on the bottom of the bumpers themselves. Did Triumph keep the same valance and just move the mounts for the bumpers into these old turn signal holes?

The bumpwers that I found were off a 74 but have the Rubbers, so would they fit my 75?? No serial number available!!

Unfortunately the rubber bumpers won't guarantee it - you need to look at the donor bumper and see if it has the recesses on the bottom for the turn signal lights.

From your picture your 75 has the turn signal lights mounted below the bumper. On a 74 before commission number CF27000, the lights are still above the bumper I think. So look at the donor bumper, if it has the recesses for the signal lights below the bumper then yes it will fit. If not, no I don't think it will.

Best thing I've seen for some of this, other than a factory parts book is TRF's spare parts catalogue (Vol. 2) - it used to be on the web, I bet if you do a search it will crop up.

Opa,

Not quite true on that one. My 1974 has signal lights above the bumper as you described AND the ugly rubber bumpers and my VIN falls in that number range.

I don't think that Triumph ever got an exact serial number range correct for anything on these cars.

Doug,

That will work well for the front, but on my 74, there were rectangular cutouts on the rear for the overrider brackets that would be very obvious directly below the taillamps.

As I understand it, these were not present on the later models.

But if you are installing everything, it doesn't matter.

I was just quoting from the moss parts book, but your right, seems there was a little lee way when it came to changes and or upgrades.Keeps things interesting...

Brian-

The rear bumper will mount fine, the rear valance and fenders stayed unchanged through 74-76 (CF12500 onwards)

You probably should check the front bumper carefully though - my earlier comment was about that - you could potentially get into fitting troubles as the mounts were raised at CF27000 and a lot of 74s with rubber bumpers were built before that commission number.

Randy

I believe that Randy is correct in that assessment, both about the rear and the front.
