I'm restoring my 79 Spitfire and one of the things that really stands out on the outside is the bumpers, especially the rear. The black is peeling and deteriorating leaving grey metal showing. It looks really bad and I'm hoping I'm not looking at replacing the bumper. Does anyone know how to restore this?
 
Does your 79 have "rubber" bumpers? If so you can buy paint specfically formulated for use on plastic. I painted my 80 Spitfire's bumpers and they look great, if I may say so myself?
 
I used Bumper Paint on my TR8, and it looks great. A previous owner had used standard black paint that was all broken and flaking. I sanded the paint off and sprayed the bumper black. It cost $5 at my local auto parts store.
 
This is good to hear. My '79's rubber bumpers have flaked off in a few spots. I planned to just ignore it, but if the fix is so inexpensive I'll probably tackle it when the weather warms. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif
 
P.O of my MGB LE painted it with bumper paint, but did a mess of a job, I am going to redo it this summer.....make sure you mask everything around the area...it's almost impossible to get off once it's on.
 
I just took the rubber part of bumpers off. Lightly sanded them with a 3M pad, cleaned them with soap and water, and then a final cleaning with acetone. Put them on a couple saw horses and put several coats of Dupicolor black bumper paint on them. I bought two cans of paint and used both of them, although only about a can and a half is really needed in my opinion. It really improved the look of the car.
 
Woohoo! This sounds like a project I'll definitely be tackling once my Volvo is back in one piece and the weather warms up. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
