Building a TR6 Racer

Alright, now that I've finally got a daily driver besides the Triumph, it's time to get off my tail and do something about racing. This winter and next summer I'll be stripping the TR6 down and building it into a race car. Trouble is, I know little about all the rules and regulations required in building said car. I've thought about taking it vintage racing, obviously, but is there an "modern" SCCA class that it would fit into? If so, is there any hope of it being competitive? If not, I guess I'll have to build it to fit into the SCCA vintage spec. Either way, where could I get a rulebook on all the regulations on building a car within the rules and safety regs?

This is the group I would recommend.
I've run some vintage events with them and they are excellent folks.

They will be at Summit Point on Thanksgiving weekend. If you can get away, it would be well worth stopping by to scope them out on Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

See their "Rules and Regulations" link at the bottom of the VRG homepage for car rules.

SCCA allows TR6's in the E-Production category. Triumph TR's were competitive up until SCCA brought in the big horsepower cars in the later 90's, the TR6 cannot win the Runoffs on speed in it's current spec. Also to be very competitive in SCCA racing you will have to spend 10's of thousand of dollars to build to the limit of the rules (think $40k+).

On the east coast, most vintage car builders build to SVRA rules. Most other clubs (VSCCA is the only one I can think of that doesn't) accept SVRA legal cars. Here is their rule set..

Here is the rule set for the race Group that TR6's are classified in under SVRA rules:

I recommend you get in touch with the Friends of Triumph crew. If you have any questions about the FOT there are a few of us here that can help you out.

Webb, whatever you do, have a thorough understanding of the rule book before you even start.
I've said this before, but as the Chief Tech Inspector at Waterford, I've had to tell people they couldn't put their car on the track until they brought it into compliance with the rules. They built the car with the best of intentions, but, simply put, "if it don't meet the rulebook, it stays on the trailer".
And, don't be such a stranger around here!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Yes, I understand. I've observed tech inspection a few times at VIR and know how strict it is. Looks like I'd be building a vintage racer. I'd love to run SCCA races, but if I'm going to be completely outclassed, it's not worth it. Thanks for the help fellas...I'm sure I'll be back for a second helping. (No pun intended)
