My brother has a custom VW that is nearing completion. It has been chopped 4 inches, has suicide doors, rear fenders are 4 inches wider than stock and fronts are 3 inches wider than stock. The engine is a Bernie Bergmann crate unit, 2110cc and makes 128 hp, 114 lb-ft at the crank and puts the power to the ground through a Freeway Flyer trans axle (fourth gear is an overdrive). The wheels and tires will bolt right onto a Porsche Boxster and it has four wheel disc brakes. Most of whats left to do on it is finish the wiring, interior and get the custom glass made.

We spent the weekend at a Good Guys Hot Rod show. It drew a LOT of attention. The most common misconception was that we had stretched the car. Here are some pics...

That's a great looking Beetle, one of the best custom's I think I've seen...

Gives a whole new meaning to Fahrfignewton!

VERY nice!!

Impressive!

Its is pretty fun and quick. That could be amplified by not having a windshield yet though and the air rushing through the empty windshield hole gets pretty stiff. It doesn't weigh much either so the power to weight is pretty good.

He is very happy with it so far. So am I. I have done or had a major hand in most of the mechanical work. I'm also overseeing the whole project and have final say on all the fit and finish. The chop and suicide doors were part of his original idea but the rest of the aesthetics have mostly been my call. I did think he should pick out the colors and seat patterns for the interior, but he has asked for my input on all of that as well. You can check out the whole saga at https://www.bugzilla.com

I should also probably put it out there that the name "Bugzilla" for this car predates the Linux/Unix stuff by quite a few years. He came up with the name long before he bought the shell and that was ten years ago when he bought the shell.

That being said, my brother is a Unix/Linux sysadmin and has been since the early 90's when he learned his trade in the US Army. He's also one of the founding members of the Northern Colorado Linux Users Group. So since his job is closely associated with another "Bugzilla" it actually has nothing to do with the name of the car. The car name came about because he was a HUGE fan of ZZ Tops "Cadzilla", custom Cadillac that was made in the mid/late 80's.

I'm sure some of the computer geeks will be the only ones that understand what I just wrote, but there you go... I don't understand much of it myself...
