We've had an unusually wet summer here and are now inundated with all manner of bugs! We especially have grasshoppers and their caterpillars all over the place! Anyone else see an increase in bugs in your area this year?

Your not alone, we were infested with Gypsy Moths, mainly on the fruit trees we have on the place. Their all over the North East section of Oklahoma, probably the whole state. PJ

About the only increase I've noticed here, is gazillions of grasshoppers, due to the unusually dry weather we've had all summer.

You know it's dry, when walking across the lawn only makes a crunching sound. eek

Oh, those poor grasshoppers - you should be more careful where you walk...

Unusually wet here too. Rainy season has been extended, still here since May. The crop of mosquitoes is astounding. And some little tiny frogs.

Palmetto bugs are the ones the make me go eeek.

Those are mostly harmless, just big 'n noisy. Fun with a set of Badminton rackets!

The spider population here this year is at an all time high. They're everywhere! June was very wet, then it quit raining and the rest of the summer has been rather dry.

We have more than our fair share of spiders too! But that's pretty normal here. I hate spiders! Creepy little buggers!

We too have had an unusually wet summer, and have had a ton of bugs this year. One of the oddest critters to show up are toads, lots and lots of small toads. We never have amphibians around here, the closest we get are horny toads (which I haven't seen any of this year). On a side note, we are still having to mow our yard, which is usually burned up and dead by the beginning to middle of July.

Here's a pic I took of a cicada on my deck. When the sun goes down these guys are singing in unison.

Try an infestation of Camel Crickets. They have long wavy antennae and can jump about two feet - usually right at you. Adults are almost 2" long too. Check them out online.

I remember, years ago, Maru and I had just arrived in Albuquerque for my first tour here. As we drove onto the base, we heard this cacophony of noise unlike anything we'd ever heard before. Turns out it was Cicada! They can get quite loud.

here also, and, we are close to the lake - a ridiculous amount of Midges this spring

Hey Walt, I haven't seen a horny toad in years. Kinda miss the little throw-back buggers. We usually have a fat toad that lives near our front step and waits for bugs all night under the porch light that we leave on. Have to watch opening the door though. Seems he would like to come in.

Bayless.

When I was a kid I'd catch horny toads all the time, I thought they had to be just about the coolest critters. Now we don't have nearly as many I only see half a dozen or so every year.
We have actually had a couple of the toads manage to make their way into the house this year. The dogs have gone nuts when it has happened.

My wife and I planted some milk weed plants in our backyard to attract Monarc Butterflies. They come about twice a year and the catepillars devour the leaves on the plants and in a few days after that we have these beautiful butterflies flying around. They will only eat milkweed.
