Bugeye transport

I get the title to my new Bugeye tomorrow via UPS overnight. I'm excited! Now I just have to get the car. Seller will not be able to deliver due to health concerns, so I'm looking at either having it shipped, or going down to get it. I'm trying to round up a trailer now so I can go get it. Any experiences (good or bad) with auto transporters? Having it shipped is my fall back if I can't round up a trailer in the next week or so. Car is in San Diego, I'm near Salt Lake City, UT. About 700 miles.

well, the car will fit on a standard uhaul trailer, which if you have a truck or access to one is about the cheapest you can get it from A to B. but the trailer is a little wide, but the car will fit it is somewhere in the ball park of $350 but then again I was getting my car towed form arkansas to california about 1950 miles. I would say get the trailer here cause a one way price is better than round trip. also figure in about 3-5 tanks of gas for the trip. and don't forget to change your oil at least after its all said and done. if you don't put your truck through the usual abuse of hauling 2000 lbs of car and trailer, an oil change before and after would be a good idea shipping services are a rip off. don't waste your money on such a short trip, just plan a saturday leave early in the morning, heck if the car runs, rent a hotel out here in San Diego, and take a trip from sandiego to ocean side along the pacific coast highway with the top down. doesn't get any better than that, leave on sunday and you got a weekend in the books. and that should cost less the the price it would get to get some no name shipping service, handling your new "baby".

I used AAAA Advantage Transport to ship my non-running Bugeye from outside (really outside) of Phila, PA to Newport Beach, CA for around $1250. I am sure SD to SLC would be less ($800?), given that mileage/gas is a huge variable.

It's not the cheapest way (Yes, you could rent a Uhaul and do it yourself--although even that is $400+), but it's fairly easy way.

Took a while, but my contact at the shipping company was very helpful and very easy to work with--he had his hands tied with haulers who didn't want to go out to the remote location to pick up the car--that is, it wasn't his fault.

Let me know if you want the contact info

Heck, if you take the bonnet off and stick it sort of inside the car, a Bugeye fits in a standard 8' American pick up truck bed. I brought one home from Maine to NJ in the bed of a Chevy pick up.
If I knew how to attach pictures on this forum, I could show you.

How much hung over the tailgate?

Really? I had figured the Bugeye was too narrow. My TR4 fit, but it was close. Figured the TR4 was wider than a Bugeye. That's probably the easiest solution if I can't borrow a trailer locally.

It does fit in a regular size pickup bed, then you put the bonnet on a very light weight trailer behind, no big deal.

A Bugeye will just fit in a 2004 Chevy if it has 155's on it, wiggle the steering wheel and you can get it in. The sills will rub the wheel wells so only do it with a parts car. I've contemplated building a frame of 2x's and plywood to elevate the bed floor to the wheel well height, or there about, but it doesn't really make sense. A 6'x12' open trailer from Uhaul work best. Around here they are $29.99 per day local rental. If you rent it one way it is a lot more. For 700 miles that is only a two day rental and gas.

Heck, my lawn mower won't even fit in my fullsized Dodge pickup!

Cuz it is a Dodge! And they do not know what a Bugeye is in Mexico where you truck was manufactured.
Cheers, David. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

LOL, well said David. Just think how much grass Tony must have.

Maybe your grandson should start with a Bugeye Tony. By the time he is 6 he could give you a rare old time.

Jack

I'm starting him out with a little wooden MGTD - got the plans & have a few years to get it finished.

Think I saw some factory miniscale TR3 pedel cars. Were true scale models. Bet they hard to come by, but for a grandson no prob, right?
