Bugeye tach drive generator

I need a tach drive generator to put on my 1275 that will be going in my B/E.

I ordered one from VB for $189. I'm returning it because it was defective. A retaining plate inside the case in front of the armature was loose from it's rivets.

Overall not a bad looking unit, but not quite up to OE standards.

Another issue is that the fan won't install properly because of the way the repro is designed. When the generator fan is installed it rubs on the case. I tried to gain clearance by making a spacer from some spare flat washers, but then there is not enough left on the shaft to put on the pulley with a lockwasher and nut.

I can probably exchange it and do some creative engineering on the piece and make it work, but other vendors also sell this item (eg. Moss, AH Spares, Kirks Auto, and others). Does everyone carry the same part (mine was labeled "made in India"), or are there better quality repros elsewhere?

It's hard to imagine more than one factory making these in the world, but looking at the pictures from some of the other vendors there may be slight differences which makes me wonder.

TIA
Fred

I'd recommend dilegently watching e-bay till a good used or good rebuildable comes up. I think Star electric was the rebuilder who used to be on here. The one I'm currently running used a regular lucas rear plate with the tach drive spigot glued into the bearing housing. Not the best but may be better than whats offered now.

Kurt.
