Bugeye Steering Wheels

I need a new steering wheel for my 1960 Bugeye. The one that ca,me with mine looks like it came off of a dune buggy. Is there a standard way of describing the measurements or specifications for a steering wheel? Also, how do I go about removing the horn button? Does it pull off? I can't tell how mine is attached.

The factory horn button, which is often used on aftermarket steering wheels, just pulls off. There is an index bump so that the horn contact lines up. Does yours have the little "flash" emblem on it?
Well, that's the one.

Mine is neither the original wheel or horn button. I am prepared to try to pull it off and live with the consequences, if that is a typical way of removing the horn button to get to the wheel nut(s). Besides this wheel looking completely wrong for the car, I need to replace it because it is very "dished," which puts the rim too close to my chest.

Anyway, thanks for the help. I will try giving it a pull tomorrow.

I am still interested in how to describe the measurements for a replacement wheel. I do not want to rely on descriptions saying, "fits a Sprite," etc.

Good luck on your hunt. If you're looking for original wheel, it was a gigantic two spoker. Sold mine several years back so cannot measure for you, but sure someone will. The number 17" diameter sticks in my mind, and holding my hands out in the position (that they lived with as an only car for 30 years), what came up was 16". If you are going to buy an aftermarket wheel that looks proper, like a Moto Lita or something, then size really doesn't matter much it seems.

I kept forgetting to measure stock bugeye wheel each day. For what it's worth: 16" dia & dished (tough to measure) about 1".
I don't think it would be too hard to find an original.
Probably same $
Good luck./ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif
