The speedometer needle in my 60 Bugeye, original, jumos all around. Sau plus minus 10 mph form true.
I have replaced the cable nd made sure it is free.
Any thoughts re the cause? I would like to keep the orig spedo but I have a spare or two lying around.

Cheapest likely cause is worn speedo gear. There is a couple docs on speedos and tachs available. Someone will post link and if all else fails Nissongers for R&R.

I also had a problem like this with my MGC. Found way too much grease on the cable and after cleaning it off the needle jumping disappeared.

Thanks never thought it could be too much grease. Will give it a try

If the cable is new all that's left is the gear or the speedo. Mine did the same thing last year and it turned out to be the speedo, I used West Valley Instrument Specialists in California to rebuild mine since they are closer to me. Morris did an awesome job.

After cable and lubrication issues, the most common cause of the needle jumping is the air gap of the magnetic disc being off or having too much run out. Palo Alto Speedometer is an excellent shop if you end up wanting professional repair.

Speedo gear looked good when I installed. BTW why are these so expensive?? I think I have another lying around form my collection of bits.
Thanks for info on repair shop. I will swap out speedo to see if it performs differently. I previously switched out the cable to see if it made a difference but no luck.
