Bugeye rebound strap bolt broke

Hi All,
Trying to replace rebound straps. Got one side off OK, but when torqueing other side the lower nut (12-342 in Victoria British catalogue) the bolt broke off. Is this bolt welded in? What can I do to replace, other than drill it out - its a 3/8 so no small puppy.
Thanks, John

Straps Google The Strapping Lad. Replace both.

I had a similar problem on a later model axle housing. And yes, these are welded into the axle housing. I was trying to undo the nut and the bolt snapped at the base of the threads. My fix was to drill into the welded in bolt, that is actually fatter than a 3/8" bolt, maybe 1" to 1 & 1/4" or so, then tap that hole most of that distance with a new thread. I found a long 3/8" bolt with maybe 2 1/2" of thread and screwed it in, with some JB weld on the end to "lock" it in place. Then cut the nut head off and clean up the the new end of the thread. ended up with 1 & 1/2 ', enough for the new strap and washer and lock nut.

Got to be careful to get the pilot hole centered, start small and build up as you drill and whatever you do, DON't snap the tap off in the hole, since these are hardened steel and cannot be drilled out. Good luck.

Cheers
Lew
