Bugeye rearview mirror studs...

Does anyone have a part number for the mounting studs? I know at least one of them is a 'lift the dot'.

Can you guys tell that Jack's progress has given me the kick in the butt I needed to get back to work on the Bugeye? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

What the heck are rear view mirror studs?

Your package wraped Ben, that was a pain.

Kick, kick.

For some reason I have a mental picture of a tonneau stud being used to hold at least one side of the mirror. Were yours just screws Jack?

Thanks Jack! I'm trying to find someone to do aluminum polishing but it looks like there may not be anyone local. But I did find a guy in my town that can anodize now! WOOT!

On my RHD car there was a lift the dot stud to the left (passenger side) of the mirror, and no stud to the right, so presumably it's the same but opposite on a LHD car.

John,
On my LHD car there is a lift the dot stud to the right (driver's side) of the mirror and none to the left (for the Tonneau).
I thought it was someting the PO did, but maybe they came from the factory that way.

On the Tunebug, the mirror is held down with 2 machine screws (10-32, with captive nuts). This is a LHD car, and there is a hole in the dash to the right of the mirror base for a stud for the tonneau cover.

I've circled the hole in the picture attached. The pair of holes closes to the edge are the original mirror mounting holes.

Edit: updated pic with better captions.

That is not correct Ben, the rear view mirror is held down with two chrome bolt screws with dome shaped heads. The tonneau center is held with a lift a dot fastner, try a boat supply place for nice ones.

The "lift-dot" studs through the mirror base are definitly a PO modification!

Jack,

I went by West Marine at lunch, all they had were the tapping type. Luckily I did need some of those as well though /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif so I picked up a bag of 5 for $7. Not a bad price.

Now to find a few nice chrome bolts for the mirror.

Ben,
Mine here is the same as yours. And will not be changed because then the tonneau cover wouldn't fit correctly. We just might have same covers from yesteryear...

Think I used stainless bolts from ACE or maybe I got chrome ones there as well.

While I do not believe they are original, I can see where they actually might create a better seal from rain etc. by keeping the tonneau closed tighter! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbsup.gif

Lee,

Does you car have the studs for the short tonneau or the long one? I thought that mine may be setup this way because of the short tonneau that used to be with the car. I sure wish I had it for a pattern.

The studs that came out are odd looking. The threads look to be 8-32 and about an inch long. I certainly haven't seen anything like them in a catalog.

Think I need to go purchase a sewing machine and make a pattern of the tonneau I have. Just checked new Moss catalog. Bugeye $268.95....geeze...but it does include fasteners....lol

ncbugeye is unrestored, unmodified (except under the hood) and looks like this:

Well most Lift-the-dots have a 10/32 thread as does the original mirror screws so someone just used the studs as screws. I guess it makes sense, no extra holes for the tonneau. BUT do you have THAT tonneau? If so, any marine or boat shop stocks 10/32 stainless lift the dot studs but they do come in sheetmetal, 8/32, and metric threads. Make sure you get a 10/32.

Ben,
Short with cutouts for the rollbar.
