Bugeye Progress

Lookin' REAL NICE!! Let's see the latest!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbsup.gif

And another returns from the grave. Nice indeed.

Here is an update on the Bugeye. It is getting pretty close to being back on the road. I am hoping to drive it around the block this weekend. In all honesty it has been pretty close for the last two years. I just finished the dash wiring last night and started it with the key and the starter switch for the first time since 1988, before heading out for dinner last night.

My father finished up the body work and painted it (and an enormous amount of other work (but he is retired)) back in '07. In the last two years I have been able to get the hydraulics sorted, the engine running, the new paint 98% wet sanded and buffed, most of the assorted trim and lights put on, the wiring harness in, all but the headlights installed and wired, reside the house, remodel the upstairs bathroom, helped the wife get the nursery fixed up and had a little girl this July. It is obvious that the Bugeye has been on the back burner for some time...

Can you spot the errors in this picture? Other then the lack of progress on the interior, there are at least three things wrong with this Bugeye dash.

I am planning to get the interior in this weekend and hook up the fuel line to the gas tank. Might get a chance to run it up and down the drive this weekend. I will post some pictures with interior as soon as it is done.

MG wheel, Black shifter cover can, washer pump in wrong place, and ...

That was the three I was thinking of. Can we just stop listing them there?? The MG button was just something I had sitting around, the black shifter cover is on the post-running to do list, and the washer pump just makes me sick. That is where it is on right-hand drive cars, according to the drivers manual.

So.... what do I win?

No one will know but us guys.

A little more this weekend. I managed to finish up the drivers side interior tonight. I still need to put in a few more pieces of carpet and panels. Here's a picture.

By golly, looks real nice and very much as a Bugeye should.

Looks great Brian!
I'm quite a bit behind you in 'drivability'..I'm at bare metal now, getting ready to do some filler and primer/paint. Then it's re-assemble time!
When we get them done, we should go for a drive around town!

BTW..did you know there is a British Car show in Katy on Oct 17th? The Houston area MG group puts it on. Let me know if you're interested in details.

Keep at it! You're in the fun stage..I'm over here green with envy!

More updates. Got some time in to work on the Bugeye this weekend. My goal was to get the car ready for state inspection. I finished up almost all of the electrical work, and I got the fuel line from the tank hooked up and was able to dispense with the model T gas tank I have been using (an old paint thinner can that my dad modified as a temp tank for his T years ago). Once around the block for the first time in ~22 years! It is still missing the passenger seat, door pockets, and about three pieces of carpet, but I doubt it will fail inspection based on those issues.

woo hoo - congrats! looks great

Another update. It is almost legal! I need to get it titled and registered in Texas, but I did manage to get it inspected last Friday. The inspection station checked that the turn signals and brake lights worked and that was about it. I spent about 20 minutes answering questions like, "Is the engine in the front or the back?" and taking cell phone pictures. I just have to mount the door panels, install the door trim I have on order from MacGregor and that is the end of the interior. Does anyone have a good solution for attaching the bottom of the seat backs? I used the original clips, but they seem barely up to the job.

She's just waiting for 2025!

She's wondering "where are the door panels?"

I also discovered the source of the noise I had coming from the rear end on hard braking. The hub on the passenger side was hitting the new wheel cylinder. You can see the gash in the picture below. On closer inspection the cast tab on the back of the wheel cylinder that hooks to the backing plate had broken off, allowing the wheel cylinder to pull away from the backing plate. Anyone else have this happen?
