Bugeye on B-J auction

It is 7:30 PM here in Ohio and there was just a mention on Speed Channel auction coverage that a Bugeye will be on the block this evening.

It just sold for 19 grand and it wasn't a concourse car. It came with the original steering wheel as a spare for the Mota Lita that was in place. The original carbs were there but it had a Weber setup in use.

And before the Bugeye, they sold a Metropolitan for $30,000 and an Isetta for 41,000. When looking for a first car for my daughter, she spotted a nice Metro for $2,500 but we got a VW for $800 instead. May have been another mistake.

Or maybe just maybe the mistake was the bidder

The world's gone crazy! A BE is one of coolest cars ever, a Metro or Isetta are cool but, well, to each his own I guess.

was watching the bidding for a 2007 Smart car. Apparently not necessarily even legal in all 50 states - so, not even necessarily possible to put on the road. I changed the channel when in EARLY bidding it was already going for more than a new 2008 50 state ready car was listing for.

To my mind Craig Jackson is one of the smartest guys on the planet to get a piece of every bid especially when somehow the presence of TV Cameras and tents seems to cause people with deep pockets to loose their minds. Ironic really since I suspect most of those guys got their deep pockets by knowing the value of their product.

Some of them have deep pockets because their "daddy" knew the value of their product. And some of them want people to believe they have deep pockets.

In all fairness, the European spec Smart cars get much better fuel mileage than the ones offered here. I believe the Euro car gets 40-60 MPG while ours gets 30-40. Main difference is the US cars only come with that stupid 5 speed "manumatic" transmission with horrible gearing (as far as fuel economy is concerned). I don't think paying a high premium for the extra mileage is worth it though......you'd have to drive a lot of miles to pay that difference.

That said, people do get over excited at events like this and pay far too much for cars than they should. I figured sales would be soft given the current economic strife, but I guess B-J can sell cars no matter what.
