Fred, you’ve done nothing wrong. Lifting by going to fast causing the gearbox to lock up is indicating it has way to much wear inside and has finally said its time to fix me… "It has over shifited".
Take a good look at your shifter forks and locking bolts, hub springs, and main shaft and cluster gear bearings. I would replace all the bearing in conjunction with the cluster shaft if I go in anyway. But Be sure that you shin everything back correctly to its correct specifications and your lifting issues will be gone.
Muscle it out? You'll probably break something and be worse off if you try to do that. Call AAA if you have it and specify a flatbed truck only. Go with the flow...
That's a typical indication of the 1st/2nd gear synchro hub overextending it's range, allowing the interlock balls to emerge from the inner hub. You're not likely to get it back to neutral, especially if one or all the balls came out. With the balls out, the springs get jammed between the inner and outer ring. You'll have to remove it from the car and rebuild it.
Thanks to all who responded! The rocking action seemed allow a small amount of movement. Then after some various parking lot maneuvers I was able to begin shifting normally once again.
I did a rebuild (replaced a few bearings) the transmission myself several years ago. It would not stay in 2nd without holding the shift lever there after. Several years of resting on blocks later I retired from teaching and began rebuilding and upgrading pretty must everything. I had the transmission professionally rebuilt and was back on the road last September. This time it would pop out of 3rd gear. During last winter my transmission specialist went back in to remedy the problem. Now it is back to popping out of 2nd gear when I lift. Obviously I am getting weary of going through this process. My specialist thinks that he knows what he did wrong. I do, too. Being that 1st and 2nd are linked together on the same shaft my recent problem with locking up in 1st is likely (in my humble opinion) due to the gears engaging 2nd are not being extended far enough and those for 1st engaging too far. I will likely take it all apart again this winter.
No, as I stated, it has to do with the detent balls in the 1st/2nd synchro hub assembly. The popping out of second gear is the same issue. Those parts are too loose to keep things where they belong. It's also possible the detent pegs and balls for the forks are assembled wrong, missing, worn or weak.
