I've bought original gauges for my bugeye and I'm looking for an original unit with the tach drive on the back. My BE has a 1275, later generator and gauges. I see generators are in the Moss catalog for $200. I've checked with Tony and a few other sources but haven't found a used one yet. Anybody have a used one out there they would like to sell or are these like searching for hen's teeth?

My 59 has the original generator so I do look for them on Ebay. They show up occasionaly, but since most people convert their cars to negative ground, there aren't many left out there.

While they're not rare...let's say they're not common either!
 
Postive or negative ground, same generator no prob.
 
Aren't these similar to units used on the TD? Or was that just a weird dream.

John, are you looking for one to rebuild, or one in working order?
 
Same unit. In fact mine is.

I have a good shop up here that could rebuild one for me, so long as it was in decent shape I would take a rebuildable core.
 
I have a rebuidable, but it needs an armiture plus and the rebuild on them is over 100 bucks alone. Might as well have a new one.

While I'm looking I guess it's down on the list... but on the list! I need to get the brakes fixed first then get it running.
 
I guess I should go dig through my spares and see if I have one.
 
I always thought it kind of "backyard adaptation" to run the tach from the generator. So I went to a TR6 distributor with the tach drive on it's base, and a Spitfire tach using a BE faceplate. Otherwise I would have just used an electronic. I can't imagine that the OE type little gearbox is a good long-term solution. Is there any way it could possibly last 50000 miles?
 
Someone was exploring an alternator from a tractor that had a tach drive. Does anyone know what became of that investigation?
 
For those of you in the Northeast (N.Y., N.J. esp.) I used to use an outfit called Amboy Generator. They could rebuild just about anything. Don't know if they are still around, but definitly worth a check!

I was just thinking about thaT tractor conversion. Here is what I had saved from that discussion. It is pricy at $220, but I wonder if anyone has given it a try.

FORD) 12 Volt Conversion Kit - For 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000, 7000. 1965 and up , gas and diesel. Converts 6-volt systems to 12-volt and updates older 12 volt tractors- Replaces Lucas Generator Includes rebuilt unicharge alternator with pulley and internal self exciting regulator, brackets, wiring harness and instructions. Includes tach drive. (Part No: 6X10300ALTH)

P.S. You going to make the Dayton show this Saturday?
 
I dunno, about the Dayton show. I spent all last Saturday at a car cruise in Somerset KY. They had 1700 cars. It was wild. And this weekend is the Nat'l StreetRod show here in Louisville and I haven't been to it in several years.

I didn't remember the tractor conversion being that expensive. I guess that is why nobody explored it further.

I know I have some, I think it was a whole box of TD and non TD, I just dunno what state (geographically) they are in or how many my brother may have borrowed ;). I will search for it in my travels.

Thanks Pat, keep me in mind if you find one. Like I said, I don't need it anytime soon, but eventually, I'll want to put my car back the way it came.
 
I have one, it was in the truckload of parts my PO gave me when I bought the car. It LOOKS to be in good condition (no grime, no rust) but I can't think of a way to test it without swapping it for the one on the car.
