The stud is 5/16" rather than 1/4". The BMC Service Parts List AKD829 third edition June 1960 says that there should be a rubber washer on each side of the the silencer support along with a flat zinc coated washer and a lock nut.
P/N 2A2093 Bush-Silencer support (rubber)
P/N PWZ205 Washer for rubber bush (5/16")
P/N LNZ205 Lock nut for rubber bush (5/16")
If you are going to use a bolt through a hole (as I am) then I would also put a fender washer on each side against the metal boot pan. I'm probably going to use some J B Weld on the fender washers and the 5/16" bolt. I haven't decided the length yet. I do understand that was your original question.

Thanks, Ray. I thought I had read from an earlier post that the bolt was 1/4", which I thought was sort of light weight. Thanks for the correction, and thanks for the additional information. I plan on tacking the bolt to the washer and then tacking that to the floor with my mig welder. I am trying to keep everything stock, but this is one weak area I will have to reinforce. I can only fit a 1 1/4 " washer on the inside, but I will probably use a larger plate underneath the car. I am still waiting on the two rubber bushes, but I was just anxious to finish this area. If no one lets me know the length, I will just have to wait and do a trial fit then.
