Bugeye - been on CL b4- here again- your thoughts?

I would like to own a Bugeye, this might be the only way seeing as I'm heavily invested in my home and have little cash.

https://seattle.craigslist.org/see/car/567100592.html

So please tell me what you all think.

I've talked with the owner every time it's come up for sale, it was apparently sold twice before but here it is again!

I don't think that engine is from a "1200 cc Pinto". No such thing.

It looks like a 1600 cc "Kent" engine, which did come in early Pintos. Actually, the little 1600 Ford is a great swap in a Spridget....fairly popular about 20 years ago.

Otherwise, looks to be a fair price for 2008 (I sold a running Bugeye when I was in college for under $100).

Thanks, my memory isn't what it used to be so I've asked him all the usual questions again.

"where's the bondo, what about dents, can I drive it home?"

Now I'm waiting for him to call me.

The IRS has been kind to me this year, so I could see getting this. I would probably sell Frank a little later in the year and use the proceeds towards fixing this one up.

Just pondering at this stage.

Rick;
that car has all the original parts, if I read it correctly.
I don't think it would be too bad a deal at all.

Just my opinion, but "GO FOR IT"

Besides, you really want a car, I can tell from all your posts

As long as you know what you are getting yourself into...

Any Bugeye is worth it, though some just take a bit more time (and ca$h) to reach where you want them to be. If it's a sound car structurally, go for it.

Re: Bugeye - been on CL b4- here again- your thoug

Great, well if I can get a callback from him anyway.

I'll need the approval of SWMBO - but that shouldn't take much with the whole "its an investment" angle.

I'll tell her that I would be willing to sell Frank.

That's not a kent engine unless they used an ohc head for the pinto. It's probably a 2.0, similar to the 2.3.

If it's not too badly butchered for the engine conversion, like the trans tunnel and chassis, it's probably worth putting together, assuming rust is ok.

I would go for it.

You're right. It looks like a 2.0 OHC Pinto engine.
I'd prefer the Kent engine but the 2.0 is still, not a bad engine. Should be pretty fast in a Bugeye.

Nice!! Buy it, finish it and drive the heck out of it.
Too bad you're not closer to FL. Just picked up a nice 1275 in a package deal with 3 MG's. See pic.

Re: Bugeye - been on CL b4- here again- your thoug

One thing I noticed is that the wheels are also not BE wheels which leads me to wonder how much of the total running gear IS original Sprite stuff. The radiator is also not original!

Re: Bugeye - been on CL b4- here again- your thoug

The battery tray was hacked as well as the front radiator mounts that leads me to wonder what else was chopped up.

I suppose he has had a lot of people mention the hacking to him already. If I can get him to I'd like to go see it today.
From memory he has not been the most communicative person ever.

Thanks for the comments, if I do get to see it I'll take some better pictures and post them here.

Rick

I hope that you get a looksee.

Re: Bugeye - been on CL b4- here again- your thoug

I just sent off two emails (from my different accounts) to try and make sure he sees at least one of them.

Another thing that irks me about Craigslist sellers is that they will post something like "E-mail with your phone number for contact~ no phone number, no contact!" then after you send him your numbers he emails you back and what?
No phone number.

Re: Bugeye - been on CL b4- here again- your thoug

I take it back, he just responded and forwarded a message he sent last night (I didn't receive it).
Now I have his phone number, but the rest of the message says he has three people coming to see it today.
Can't catch a break.
