BT7 [Tri-Carb] Restoration Upgrades

Dear Forum Readers:

I have a numbers-matching '62 tri-carb undergoing complete rebuild. I'm soliciting advice on integrating performance modifications to this car: engine/drivetrain, induction, suspension, whatever. The only caveat is that all modifications can be undone in the future--should someone eventually want to put it back to completely stock condition.

I'm considering strutted suspension, weber carbs, an alloy head, and four-wheel disc brakes.

The overall goal is to improve the car's performance, reliability, and safety.

What would you (all) do?

Thanks in advance,

John

When you say improve the cars performance you need to decide exactly what it is you are trying to achieve and for what purpose. Are you planning on competing in it or just having a road car that has bit more go.

When you have decided on that you need to chose an appropriate camshaft as that is the real performance driver. Sticking triple Weber’s on a car with a stock cam means you will be massively over fuelled. Weber’s aren’t necessary on a road car but they do look good.

An alloy head doesn’t give an increase in performance other than the obvious weight saving. You can get an iron head re-ported and save yourself a huge amount of money.

Struts to replace lever arms? Why? Nothing wrong with the original set up for a road car and even the fastest Healey race cars are running on the originals. The suspension can be lowered very cheaply and is a useful handling upgrade together with a thicker anti roll bar.

If you are seeking a fast road car with drive ability then I recommend the DWR fast road cam with twin 2 inch SUs. It has a great torque curve from about 1200 revs.

Have fun.
