Thanks so much for all the helpful comments on this. I'll continue tinkering as long as the weather holds up this fall but I don't plan to bolt the air cleaners back on until everything is working well. I've been using long zip-ties to hold things together while test driving and I'm hoping that I might be able to figure out some way to create some wire clamps to hold them on permanently instead of having to go back to the notorious nuts and bolts. I'm thinking of something like the clip that holds the voltage regulator cover on. I believe there are some air filters available that do clip on but I believe I read that the foam inserts are not replaceable. Any thoughts or suggestions on this would be appreciated.

Someone on here drilled the bolts and put cotter pins thru them. you can drill them close and then adjust the bolt to make them tight.

i took a different approach and made a tupperware cover for my breathers. then sealed a hose in the top and put my gauge in it. works fine for me. but i think the pins would be nicer. any number of things that can be done easier with the breathers off.

At first I was thinking of using hitch pins - but what about this?:

PS - according to the Moss catalog they're studs, not bolts.
