Hi !

I have read somewhere that the bolts to the chassis are UNC and the bolts that require nuts are UNF. Is it true for Austin Healey cars ?

If not true, how can we know which bolt to use (in particular when the bolt is missing) ?

BSF seems to not be used on 3000, is it right (I have seen BSF bolts for AH 100 BN1 on a website shop but never for 3000) ?

When it's not obvious which to use, then I wouild suggest you tend towards UNF unless there is very little load. Fine threads are stronger than coarse, generally.
BSF and BSW were pretty much obsolete by the time the 3000 arrived.
 
The Parts Service Manual will list almost all bolts, by code. Translation of the code you can find in Roger Moment's book.
 
Hello AutoAnglaise, BSF fasteners were phased out around October 1954 on BMC cars. However you will find Whitworth sized fasteners in places like the carbs and fuel pump fittings.

I have the AH Owners Workshop Manual but there is no bolt description. Cutlass, could you give me a link to a book listing all bolts as you said ?

Does this service exist as web pages ? For example on Moss website there is all the bolts but without any description (I would like to know if it is UNC or UNF, and the dimensions).

What you are looking for is the mechanical parts service manual. It is the source for most illustrations used by parts sellers, including Moss. As far as I know, it is the best original source for such matters. It will list almost every part there is, and most fasteners are listed with a code. The Anderson/Moment restoration book has a section on decoding the fastener codes. The manual is invaluable for a thorough restoration.

It's pretty complete- I used the Anderson & Moment book for the hardware codes and then the Service manual for the list of parts.

The list is missing those fasteners that do not conform to the codes but instead had specific parts numbers of their own. As far as I can tell the only way to get those dimensions would be to physically inspect the parts, and my car was missing so much I'd have no hope of doing that.... maybe as it goes back together I'll be industrious and methodical enough to note down what those are... but maybe not, life's too short and there's so much left to do with it...
 
A worth while buy is the SC parts catalogue from GB not only does it list more or less every nut, bolt and screw used in any of the blow up sections of a big healey - all models, but it also lists by the catalogue number the size of the nut, bolt or screw.

I have seen diagrams from the Moss catologue available in the US, and they are a similar layout to the SC parts catalogue but I don't know if it goes into the same detail for the bolts.
