BROKEN ROD BOLT has any body had one?

Some people think they should only be used once I’m in the process of rebuilding my engine and was wondering what other peoples thoughts are on this. I rebuilt an engine 30+ years ago with help from my dad how was an aircraft mechanic he never mentioned that was what should be done. I can see it if you are racing but for street I’ve read about them stretching ect Also read some of the aftermarket one aren’t as good as the originals Haynes manual doesn’t mention it. So has any body had problems with reusing them?

I like to check that they will spin easily into the rod all the way down. If they are stretched, it will be in the threads and the threads will bind.

Never found a bad rod bolt, but I have found a few bad head studs & wheel studs.

But that's on TR3 motors, you didn't mention what you are building. Might be different for the other Triumph engines.

If you have a TR6, this is a known point of weakness. After 30 years plus, there is no shame in spending money to replace the bolts with stock units. You don't have to get expensive with ARP's, the stock will do just fine.

I've seen a couple of blown TR6 engines with a rod bolt broken but didn't get the history when I got the car. Average driving shouldn't be a problem but if its a second rebuild with high mileage I would think twice about it. As Randall said, if they spin good they're probably okay.

Actually, these days with people giving away stuff on the internet, you can buy ARP rod bolts almost as inexpensive as stock replacments. I'm finishing a rebuild on a TR6 engine right now and used the ARP rod bolts, which I mostly use in all my rebuilds. Heck on MG 1275s, ARP rod bolts are actaully cheaper than stock replacments from all the popular LBC vendors, it pays to check this out if repalcing rod bolts.

Ken, Post your car in your signature

OK, that prompted me to figure out how to do that, good idea, this is a test to see if it worked, sorry to interrupt, back to your bolt talk...

Didn't work
What you need to do if you change something in your profile is close the program down, just as if your updating windows or the like

It did work, except I was thinking avatar or the little pic up top, which it looks like I successfully added, not the signature line, I now realize that was not what was said, or meant....
