Broken Hearted Passing of my pet

I am sure everyone has had a pet pass but it has been a bad past 30 days. My daughter's dog which we rescued on my daughters 1st Birthday(she was tied along the road with no water or shade in July with a sign posted saying "take me or I will die here") passed away at the beginning of Feb. She was 14.5 and was a mean old sucker to any strangers to the house but the most loyal loving dog ever. My daughter does not ever remember sleeping in her room without her and she never let my daughter out of her sight even as they both became teens.

Today my best friend, my Boston Terrier Buford, the one on my sign in, passed away. He was 10 and was playing fetch and laid down could not get up and passed away in my arms. The little guy went every where with me, we would go for long rides in my TR8, kept my elderly mother company while I was at work and gave her company while I was deployed. He accompanied me from Pa to NJ, to GA, to Kansas. He was always able to sense when I was tired and jump into his navigator seat and kept me awake. When I had to go out late at night to solve some county crisis he would come and patiently wait in the truck as I worked. When the kids were home alone he stood guard and I never worried anyone woud make it into the house with out getting bit. WHen the kids went to their mom's house on the week end he spent many hours on the passager seat of my 8 supervising my maintenance. That is how he spent most of today

He had attended my kids elemetry school on bring your pet to school day for 5 years and was a regular at softball, baseball, track for the past 10 years, and he even managed to sneak into a few backetball games. When I was deployed and came home he literaly leapt into my arms when he saw me. He spent most nights bouncing between my bed and the kids beds, we always assumed just to make sure everyone was ok. We refered to it as Buford patrolling.

I am devestated. I will have another Boston soon. Thanks for a chance to clear some sadness from my heart

Re: Broaken Hearted Passing of my pet

Losing our friends is never easy! I still find myself getting teary occasionally when I think of my first "child"- Bogart, who kept me company and protected me for 14 years. So sorry to hear of your loss!

Re: Broaken Hearted Passing of my pet

So sorry for your loss. Been there with part German shepard, Woofer, that grew up with my daughters, slept with them, and would track them down in the neighborhood if they managed to get out without him. Even showed up at school in the oldest daughters class room 2 miles away. Hard times when he passed.
Other dogs and cats, too.
Lost the eldest girl on 9/13, 2 days after 9/11. Not sure how we got through it.
Not meaning to steal your thread, just to let you know that I know what you are going through and how badly I feel for you. I'll be thinking of you.

Re: Broaken Hearted Passing of my pet

Our Labrador died almost a year ago to the day and I really sympathize with you. I regularly think of him- little reminders at odd times and places. He was such a big, happy and friendly dog, I feel we got so much more from him than we gave....

Re: Broaken Hearted Passing of my pet

Most sincere sympathy. Loss of a family member is never easy. We miss the furry ones as much as the humans.

Re: Broaken Hearted Passing of my pet

Very sorry to hear of your loss. Never easy to loose a family member.

Re: Broaken Hearted Passing of my pet

Really sorry to hear of your loss. A member of the family, for sure.

I lost my own little buddy, George the nuclear powered tabby cat, two Christmases ago. Age 20, or over 90 in human terms. He's now at rest in the backyard, under a pine tree, still keeping wild elephants away from our village.

Re: Broaken Hearted Passing of my pet

You described the unconditional love our animals have for us so well. I am very sorry for your losses but I also know, from what you wrote, they lacked for nothing in their lives. Please take solace from the care you gave them.

Re: Broaken Hearted Passing of my pet

So sorry for your loss! Loosing a pet is like losing a member of the family. We adopted a mostly white Boxer someone had dumped a few years ago. He showed up in our yard starving to death and efforts to find his owners were fruitless. So, we adopted him and named him Chance because he had very similar markings to those of the Dog on the "Homeward Bound" movie. He lived till about 10 (estimate) but developed Cancer and had to be put down when his quality of life declined.

When you're ready, find yourself another little guy to love and remember fondly the time you had with Buford!

Re: Broaken Hearted Passing of my pet

Been there and done that at least five times and it is NEVER any easier.

Remember the fun and good times and the joy that she brought all of you over the years. I believe that we'll all see the ones that we loved on another day, so I'm sure your reunion will be a happy one.

Re: Broaken Hearted Passing of my pet

Do read Mark's "Rainbow Bridge". We are so very sorry for your loss. We know it isn't easy, indeed sometimes more difficult than the loss of a human. :grouphug:

Re: Broaken Hearted Passing of my pet

To quote Mark Twain, "A dog is the only person who loves you more than he loves himself." It is a sad day when we lose one.
