Broken Front Wheel Stud

My strength must have gotte nthe best of me today and I snapped off a LF Wheel Stud. I think I can pop this out with a vise. Any other easy methods other than the BFH. Or maybe that all that is really needed. Tips appreciated.
 
Jim, a BFH works fine. To reinstall, start the new stud, put a flat washer on the stud, turn a lug nut around on the threads and simply ratchet into place.

I think I still need to pull the hub in order to use the BFH. No way to get a new lug in there without julling the hub and the wheel bearing and repacking the bearing, yada, yada, yada. Correct.
 
Jim yup. I did the same today, I broke a stud on the FL and went to change it and discovered I had to pull the hub etc,,, (note that I had been telling myself to investigate the clunk sound when turning right) So as I went to loosen the four bolts holding the hub together ...well surprize surprize surprize Like Gomer used to say... there were only three, and they were all finger tight. HMM (DPO as Ive only had the car 11 months and it had new tires on it when I bought it) fixed the broken stud and the clunk all in one easy operation. Sort of glad I broke the stud .. I had forgotten about the hub bolts. Oh yeah,, I check the other side, all tight. Went for a drive and no more clunk.
 
Thats scary loose hub bolts. Found a couple of used studs down at the local LBC store junk box that I was able to chase threads on and clean up and I'll install tonight. Even thought ahead to get somemore wheel bearing grease and the correct sized cotter pin. Fortunately we have a great LBC Shop here in Dayton, OH that is about 10 minutes from me here. I'm fortunate to have a resource locally that I can ask advice and guidance of. Between his advice, boneyard of Racecar Spares for F-Prod Midget, and junk in general I've been able to find lots of things for Bugsy that I would not be able to get otherwise.

Hopefully problem resolved tonight. And I'll get to take Bugsy for a test fdrive. Warmer Temps come back tomorrow finally so got to get this guy back on the road.
 
I think I would order some nice new ones to keep in my box of tricks. Break one on a wheel I would suspect all the others as well.
 
Naw there looked pretty good. They were in a junk box but I could tell they had never been installed taking a close look at the threads on the stud where it goes through the hub. I'll mark it and replace it with a new one. For now I want to get Bugsy back on the road. Tell me you've never scrounged through your old stuff to fix things and make it work. Now if I hadn't been using a 24" breaker bar to tighten the wheel stud I would not have snapped it off. I just don't know my own leverage.
 
Holy smoke, just use a standard 3/8th ratchet.

Got wheel stud repaired last night and all went well. Punched the old one out on the bench and was able to use my big wrench that I broke the old stud with to pull it down and snug the new stud into place. All reassembled and performed a lube job. Now I remember why I hadn't done that job lately but was glad I did it. Put it all back together and Bugsy now has two front wheels both pointed in the same direction. Wow what a difference in the stability of the car and the handling. I've been driving this car for 4+ years with wheels pointed in two different direcitons. It felt squirrely at times but I had no other Spridget I'd ever driven to compare to. Wow is this even more fun than I'd ever thought possible. Can't wait to get the top down and get a better feeling of how the car now performs. Bumpsteer issue seems to be pretty much a whole lot better. Much better stability at speed but car does seem to more around more but in more control. Moves one way in response to road surfaces but then easily returns to where the wheel is pointed. Need to get used to new ride sensations and feelings before I really wring it out to test handling differences. Thanks to all for your help on this one.
 
The lesson here is harbor frieght sells torque wrenches for about twenty dollars. Buy one and check the lug nuts (35ft/lbs). Ask any racer, its just something you do. I saw a car at the SCCA runoffs last year loose a wheel on the warm up lap of the nationals. You could of had a disaster, but we all learn from our mistakes, and this was a cheap lesson. You will be suprised how often you'll use the torque wrench.
 
Yeah and I have a nice Craftman Torque Wrench sitting in my tool box. It does not get used often enough. 35 lbs. Far less than I thought. Thanks
