TR2/3/3A British High Torque starter

Can anyone tell me if you use the shim/spacer that was used with the original starter between the starter and housing when installing the new British high torque starter?

The shim was used to increase the spacing between the starter pinion gear and the flywheel ring gear. Most cars did not need it. I would try it without. If it seems to bind or make abnormally loud gear noise, then add it. Gear noise may be hard to tell from the gears in your new starter.

Yo may want to also take apart the mounting adapter plate screws.Mine worked loose after about 18k miles,allowing the starter to hang down and not engage.
One of the long screws bent,
When I called they said just put it back and recommended some loctite .I thought why didnt they loctite it when assembled.
Anyway besides that I think its a nice upgrade.
I didnt use a shim because I wasnt aware one was used.

Thanks for your reply TFB. The only reason I knew there was a shim was it fell off when I took the old starter out.

I have already installed but have not tested yet. I will know what to check for if it won't engage.

I got this starter installed and I can say it is great. The people at British were courteous and very helpful. I would highly recommend this starter if you are looking to replace yours. The price is good and quality is great.
