Found this "nice" little early 40s Evinrude Sportwin on the local Craigslist. turns over, has compression and spark. Some good cleaning and polishing, and a set of new decals should make it a sharp little unit.

She's "thrilled" because now she knows you'll want to get a BOAT to go with it!

 Shhhhh
Actually, I don't have much desire to get a boat (not enough room for storing it). I definitely will have to borrow one for a test run.

You can weld up a boat rack for most of your vehicles....

We once used a Minkota trolling motor to make jungle juice in a garbage can.

Talk about getting trashed!!! :thirsty:    :jester:

I used to have one just like that. Rope start. Throttle on engine. "Turnaround" for reverse.

We have a 14' row boat at our lake house with a 2 HP Evinrude and a 9.9 Johnson. The boat really flies with the Johnson.

Same one came with my antique Lightning sailboat. The only time I needed to use it, was the day I launched it. The planks were dry and leaked like a sieve. My marina was about five miles from the launch site and we had to take turns bailing for our lives for about ten hours, till the joints swelled enough to be just a trickle. After that I tried to never rely on my motor boating skills. Motors are for cars as far as I'm concerned.

Had a Clinton 2 HP that way. First thing I broke too ( at about age 7 or so). It didn't run and I tried to pull the flywheel. I broke both bolts for the rewind sprags. I remember thinking," Hmm , I wonder if they were the problem?"

....not much has changed since. :wall:

Last night I tore apart the carb, cleaned it all out and got everything freed up and cleaned up. This morning I put it back on the motor after giving the crankcase a shot of WD40, and sot a little in the plug holes and spun it over several times. Then I mounted it on an engine stand, gave it a shot of ether, wrapped the rope around the pulley and it roared to life for a few seconds!
I'm happy.
I'm still in the process of getting all the black paint off. It was a poorly done spraybomb job somewhere along the way. fortunately that means it comes off fairly easily.
I filled the aluminum gas tank with water several times and sloshed it around till it came out clear, and tonight I'm going to continue cleaning the tank and petcock. I'm hoping to get a test barrel and try it with a real tank of gas mix this week.
As the paint comes off and I give it a good rubbing with some polish, it's looking better and better. Nice and shiny aluminum.

Ben,

I've got 3 chainsaws (2 small Echo,& an older light metallic Blue-
Homelite)that don't work.
Can I send them to you?

- Doug

Nah, couldn't have been last night, I didn't get it fired till this morning. That was some blustery weather though wasn't it?! I've been chasing down our trash can all weekend.
Doug, pack 'em up! I've got a nice old Mac 10 saw, and a vintage Homelite generator with a Clinton motor that need some company. Let me send you shipping $$$ first hehehehehe.
I like working on these little projects. They don't take long or cost much. and they look really cool when they're done

Right on, Steve!

Rag power forever!!!

Nice little motor, even nicer sailboat. I could have a nice time in that on Seneca lake.
You look like you're having a good day there

You've got a good find although I assume that's not your boat it's leaning on.
I also have a 52 Johnson 3 for twice the power, but the Lightning is the one that gets used. It's off white now, new canvass on the deck, varnish in.

Actually the only boat I have right now is a 14' Stowe canoe. I think that motor is a bit much for that little jobbie. For now, I think I'm just gonna find a rowboat to borrow for a test run. Maybe down the road it will be a taxi motor for a day-sailer, or I'll find a nice vintage rowboat or runabout for it.
I also have a 1932 ELTO Super C that I hope to get running some day. Lots of parts needed for that one.
