BRG on my 3000?

I'm a week away from having to choose paint color for my Healey project. I've decided two things. I will paint it all one color. I will not paint it the original white color.

I am looking at doing it a British Racing Green, but when I look at pictures of BRG Healeys they are all a different shade of green, I'm not sure what the original Healey BRG looks like and where does it stand compared to the Jaguar BRG's. Here is what my research has brought me to today (assuming I do BRG).

1. Jag 55-65 BRG dark 42597
2. Jag 68-70 BRG deeper, darker 43907
3. Jag 68-73 BRG deepest, darkest 44524 (Too dark for me)

Mazda had a special BRG miata one year, non metalic that I have seen people reference as a nice BRG, and what is nice is I can go find one and assure myself of the color.
1991 Mazda Miata BRG 47037

Any thoughts or input?

HI,, there is a R & M Color simply called Racing green it is one of the most attractive greens that can pass for British racing green I have seen.--Fwiw -Keoke

A lot of BJ8s were BRG, can't you match that color?

Having the car painted in one of the correct colors for the model will help to maintain its value.

I painted my 100-6 a mid-90's Ford color named Pacific Green. I used Deltron Base-Clear. I don't remember the paint code, but there were a LOT of Ford Explorers and Pick Ups painted that color. It will be easy to find in any paint catalogue.

I don't mean to brag, but I get a LOT of compliments on the color.

A PPG # 47221 (actually called Forest Green) is a pretty close match to the BRG used on the BJ8's corresponds to GN29. Earlier Healeys (BJ7's) had GN25 which had a more yellow tinge. The BRG used on Jags seemed darker (more black) to me.

From the "Austin Healey Guide to historic colors" book by Donald Pikovnik there were two BRG for BJ8's. One is GN.25 (ICI code 8120) the other GN.29 (ICI code 9767). The first is slightly lighter in color. The latter listed as "aka "BRG-Dark". The book has good paint chips that might help you decide. Maybe some else who lives near you has a copy of this book.

GN 25 was for BJ7's, GN29 British Racing Green dark was for BJ8's according to Anderson & Moment and Clausager.

Thank you for the replies. Does anyone have a picture with GN25 or GN29? It is hard to tell just by looking at green Healeys if it has the original color.

BRG would look great on your car. Old English White is very nice also. What color is your interior?
I would recomend that you remove the tail pipes and raise the car up on blocks at least a foot or more to make it more accessable to paint. if you have to paint around the pipes you could easily get a run in the paint or a dry spot.

Good Luck

I painted my BJ8 the dark BRG which is GN29 or PPG 9767 or Dupont 8194. It looks great and I get many compliments on it.

Just curious about the stainless fender beads. Did they come out without taking the fenders off? or else how are they being protected from paint?

Thanks for the responses. Tough decision coming up, I am defintely drawn toward the darker greens, but the darkest jag BRG seems too dark for the Healey. The fender beads are double taped.

FWIW, you can get the bead out by loosening the fenders and unbending the tabs that hold the bead in place. Painting with the bead out results in a much nicer job.

Here is a link to a different web site where I posted pictures of my BRG dark car before and after buffing. Some were taken outside and some inside so you can get a good idea what it will look like.

:confuse: Nice pictures, but I'm confused about something.

Clearly it's a MKIII, with the wooden dash, but the early style lights seem to contradict the high rear ground clearance, judging by the gap between rear tire and wheel opening.

Something special?

Two issues there, Randy. First, the 1965 was a full phase 2 car, despite the single marker lights. They had all the mechanical changes, including the higher ride height, but the old light configuration. Most people see the single markers and assume it must be a phase 1, but it isn't. Second, the springs are brand new and may raise the car too much. When those pictures were taken, the interior, top and spare tire were still not in the car. Now that the care is complete, i plan to drive it for a season and see if the springs settle a bit before deciding if I want to try different rear springs.

Bill,

Thanks for the tip. I'll pass it on ot hte painter, I'm sure he will pull it out.

Ken -

You've probably made your decision already, I was out of country and off the grid last week but my choice would be DK BRG. My '65 3000 MK III's restoration was completed in that color about 20 years ago using a 2k single stage acrylic urethane and still looks great today with very little wear showing..........
I really should drive it more, only 12k miles on it now but my wife's working on more.

Dougie,

You are correct. I gave the painter the go-ahead on a BRG. I chose a jaguar color, a bit darker than the AH green. Should have color this week.

I passed the tip of pulling the bead out to the painter and he chose not to. He cleaned/polished and taped in place. He does excellent work and I pay him for the end product and not how he gets there, so I put my trust in him. It got green yesterday. It has a full week of sanding and polishing ahead of it.

The hood was a real mess, it would have been too much $ to make the inside surface good enough to paint all color, so I went with this compromise with some textured finish.
