I am looking for the very dark BRG commonly seen on the old British cars. I know color is in the eye of the owner. Jag BRG is too blue. Any success stories? Brand and code would be much appreciated and if possible the year and make it was used on so I can view trhe chips. Tom

Hi Tom,

I see you have TR3A. I think the same BRG was used on those as on TR4 up to January 1963 (see below).

Later TR4 (from CT19519), TR4A, TR250/5 and TR6 were offered in Triumph Racing Green (Martin Senour Paint code 25426, Triumph code #25). This color is rather bluish and is sometimes refered to as "Connifer Green". In fact, the background of the page Tim liked to in his post is similar to this color. I have seen it mistakenly called British Racing Green by some paint manufacturers.

A British Racing Green was again offered later in production, on TR6 beginning in 1975, but I don't know if this matches the earlier BRG.

Earlier TR4s were offered in a British Racing Green (Martin Senour Paint code 25099). I don't have a modern paint code for TR3A, but do have the original brand codes (from Bill Piggott's "Original Triumph TR". Perhaps you can cross reference these somehow:

Dockers BF5092, BF5761, BF5531, CGG40 or CHG65
ICI Hilux M-048-2855
Pinchin-Johnson PJ 428HS, PJ 428LB

The Martin Senour colors referenced above can sort of be seen at https://www.vtr.org/maintain/paint-charts/martin-senour-colors.jpg But, I must warn you this chart looks rather old and discolored to me (or perhaps a poor scan).

Okay, it isn't a Triumph, but to my eye this color looks pretty close to the TR3A/early TR4 British Racing Green:

Here's a Spitfire that's painted in a color more like Triumph Racing Green (although it's a PPG Paint code FM76954 or PPG 45102, British Racing Green):

Hope this helps!

Tim, that was an excellent site describing one man's adventure trying to find the perfect BRG.

Arrow, I think I know the color you want, but only in my mind's eye.

Two things, if you find the perfect color for your car, make sure the formula is indeed a formula and not a custom blend that you will never be able to duplicate. I do know that some spray guys can custom blend but never duplicate that color again. Or at least keep enough extra paint for touchups. But mixed paint has a shelf life because of imperfect seals on the cans.
The second of my points is the fact that every perfect BRG paint jobs that I have ever seen at car shows are all without clearcoat. I have yet to see a "perfect" BRG that caught my eye that was basecoat/clearcoat. The best BRG has a patina, not the depth that clearcoat will give the paint.

I recently restored a TR3A and the owner wanted it BRG. He said that two other TR3As that we both knew had a green that to him was too dark for the TR. When I had the car painted professionally, the only colour that they could find was a DuPont formula. It was called Triumph Racing Green for a TR4. Others call this conifer. See attachment taken outdoors in the sunshine in June 2006.

Here's a green TR that I looked at awhile back...it looks green,too.

Don't forget that the primer coat color has a role in the final color....if you use a black primer the final color will be darker than if you use light gray or buff. I like to use a tinted primer but it may not be correct for a particular color.

Here is the DuPont Triumph Racing Green Formulation (#8450F) for a US Gallon. See attachment - It's in French but here are the colours translated for you. Vert = Green, Noir Fonce = Dark Black, Jaune = Yellow, Blanc = White

Hey, I love the wheels on YankeeTR's pic of the TR3... Does anyone know what they are? TR6 wheels?... Anyone, Bueller, anyone? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazyeyes.gif (My daughter Jenna wanted me to put this emoticon in the post).

Sorry Tomshobby I meant the Tom who posted the question about the BRG color.

I went to a local PPG distributor with the Ditzler code listed in the Moss catalog. The code came back as Toyota Perseus Green /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif. When I questioned his computer skills he told me to come around the counter and look for myself. I've known the guy for years and I wouldn't recommend questioning anyone who's been mixing paint all his life. Anyway, I chose PPG/Omni MTK44490A Toyota Perseus Green acrylic urethane with clear coat compatability. I used PPG DPLF epoxy primer sealer - Gray DP50LF - I chose both products for ease of use and did not apply a clear coat topcoat. I did read that the red oxide primers will show off the green colour better but I like driving the car and this was quick and easy. OK maybe not so quick.

mrv8q, stock steel wheels with beauty rings perhaps?

[/ QUOTE ] Hey, Tom, don't think so, I'm running that setup on my car right now... these look too deep dish to me. And they're not stock TR6 wheels either, because they don't have those 3 acorn thingies to hold onto the hubcap. I know this 'cause I've got 4 TR6 whhels in my garage, w/o thingies.... Anyone else?

They could be wheels from a 1969 TR6. The early steel wheels had the hubcap acorns for the Rostyle hubcaps.

These are TR250 wheels with TR3 hub cap nubs installed...they work pretty good on that car...and the rubber is 195/70/15

Well this is slightly off topic....but anyone know what color my TR6 is?? The PO said it was BRG, but this looks more like Brooklands green to me(but brooklands might have been an MG color??)

This is a Brooklands green B I had awhile ago:

The 6 is heading for a repaint, but I wanna match the color as close as possible so I don't have to touch the engine compartment/trunk. Keep in mind that in the pics the 6 is badly faded(and in the shade - it's alot brighter in the sun).
