brake warning light coming on

70herald

Luke Skywalker

On my Nissan van - Lucas brakes. When I hit the brakes hard, the brake warning light flickers on. Usually this is supposed to be a warning that the reservoir is low, but I filled it up to the high line and it still flickers on. Do the floats in there loose their floatiness? or should I be looking for some other problem. I went over the pipes / brakes etc, no signs of leakage, pads and shoes good... just the idiot light has started to flicker on when if I push the brake pedal firmly.

2002 Serena

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_Serena

A slow noisy diesel commercial vehicle, which in very bad judgment Nissan sold in a passenger version. Similar to driving an old VW bus. Just as slow and noisy and almost as spartan.

The brakes are Lucas disk front, drum rear. Almost identical to the brakes on the Herald with the addition of self adjusters and a vacuum booster and a lot bigger.

Thanks for updating the year from 2003 to 2002 and adding the model.

I've never heard of a Serena, but the "brake warning light under hard use" on my neighbor's Nissan van (2006) was due to a sticking sensor. On his, it only happened when he hit the brake hard when driving - not just hitting the pedal hard. He flushed the system, added new fluid, and problem disappeared. Also, on his, there's a "double reservoir", and was tough to see the level in the rear reservoir - so he never knew it was low, even when the front reservoir was full.
