I pulled my brake master (rebuilt 1 year ago) and discovered that the dust boot was full to the brim with brake fluid. *sigh*

Is anyone familiar with a junk yard substitute for a '79 master cylinder? How about a professional outfit who will rebuild it for me? What about using a Wilwood universal unit? Does anyone have any experience with that?

I can get a new one for $160, but I really don't want to spend that kinda cash.
 
I had all my Healey MC's, slave and wheel cylinders resleeved by Sierra Specialty Automotive in California. If yours is a single circuit MC it should cost about $75 and they have a 10 year guarantee.

Sorry to hear that bud. i think there is no low dollar solution to this problem. I still distinctly remember someone adapting a domestic master cylinder to this application because I remember all the discussion reguarding the actuating rod length but I can't find the thread. I did send an inquiry about rebuilding to a couple of companies but the only response I got was from the fruity place I was told to steer clear of.

Naa, pleanty of places rebuild em with all new parts and sleeves, see above and also WhitePost.
 
Update:

Went to Advanced Auto Parts website, they had a rebuilt unit for $48. Crapped my pants. Hit the order button. Part came up as NLA. Doh!

Went to Brakecylinder.com. They charge $85 to resleeve my old master.

Called Billy at White Post and he quoted me $225 for a complete rebuild. Youch!

So far Brakecylinder.com is the clear winner. Any other suggestions?
 
Surely, someone on this list has one that has a decent bore that can be rebuilt.

C'mon guys... help the fellow out.
 
The one I currently have is looking like its going to need a rebuild as well, Id be interested to know which way you end up going
 
When you check at Advance (or any of the chains) remember that the brake master was the same from '68 up, Midget and Sprite.
Many of them list NLA on a '79 (or '78, etc) but have one in stock for a '70!! The kids at the counter may or may not know about this.

By the way I NEVER say that I have a Sprite- ALWAYS that I have a Midget (which I don't) because the books almost never list Sprite, only Midget.
 
I tried that trick Bill. It's a good un'. But it did not work for me this time.

I think it should bolt right up to the stock studs. It will be leaning to the side a bit, but the remote resevoir should make that a non-issue. The stroke of the plunger is just a bit shorter than stock.
 
I could see potential problems with front/rear balance and pedal pressure. You may be able to make a generic MC work... but I would try to stay with a stock unit.
 
For some reason there seems to be an abundance of 67 brake masters on Ebay. I have bought a few of them for around $25 each and they are NOS. I do stick a new kit in them just because they are new but 40 years old.
They are the single line masters but they bolt up to any 67-79 Spridget pedal box.
You lose the dual circuity and also all the headaches that accompany that dual circuit master.
I absolutly HATE that later master and always replace it with the 67 master.
Rebuilding the 67 unit takes a 2 seal $5 kit and can be done in 10 minutes.
You have to replace the fancy union/equalization switch with an earlier simple Tee junction too.
Food for thought for those tired of those leaky dual master.

So fellers, what would you do... go for a brand new Raybestos unit on eBay or have my stock cylinder resleeved? I DO NOT want to go through this again, and I am willing to a pay a few dollasrs extra for insurance. I am not willing to pay $100 extra, though. Too much Scottish blood in me veins.

I thought O'Reilly had these for some really cheap price. I'm thinking like $35-40 rebuilt.
 
I have had two done over the years by WhitePost.

They re-seleave, new brass pistons made by them and rebuild with new rubber and gaskets, etc., ready to install. Expensive yep, done right yep, problems noop.

I hate leakey master cylinders and will do just about anything or pay whatever to preclude it. That can be the nastyest place on the car.
 
I have seen postings on other forums that speak ill of resleeves. Just throwin' that out there.

I am really leaning toward new at $160.00. Raybestos is a pretty good brand. Or it used to be anyway.
